The Guangzhou Food Bible: Best Dim Sum, Street Food & Michelin Spots
There is an old Chinese saying: "Eating in Guangzhou" (食在广州). It’s not a cliché; it’s a fact. In this city, eating isn't just a biological necessity—it’s the primary social activity, a business negotiation tactic, and a daily ritual.
If you are visiting Guangzhou, forget your diet. You are entering the capital of Cantonese cuisine. From high-end Michelin restaurants to sticky plastic stools on the street, here is your guide to navigating the food jungle.
📅 Plan Your Food Trip:
Most travelers dedicate at least one full morning just to eat. See how to fit a "Dim Sum Marathon" into your schedule in our 3-Day Guangzhou Itinerary.

1. The Ritual: Morning Tea (Zao Cha)

Morning Tea (Zao Cha)
Morning Tea (Zao Cha)
"Morning Tea" is confusingly named. It’s 10% about the tea and 90% about the Dim Sum. It usually starts as early as 7 AM and can last until the afternoon.

Must-Order Dishes (Save this list!)

  • Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings): The king of dim sum. Translucent skin with whole shrimp inside.
  • Siu Mai (Pork Dumplings): Yellow wrapper, topped with crab roe. Juicy and dense.
  • Cheong Fun (Rice Noodle Rolls): My personal favorite is the Red Rice Roll (Hong Mi Chang) served at Dian Dou De—crispy shrimp wrapped in soft red rice noodles.
  • Feng Zhua (Chicken Feet): Don't be scared. They are braised until they melt in your mouth. Trust me.

💡 Jim's Cultural Tip: The Finger Tap

When someone pours tea for you, tap your index and middle fingers on the table two or three times. This is a silent way to say "Thank You." It’s a secret code that will earn you instant respect from the locals.

Where to Go?

  • Dian Dou De (点都德): Very consistent, tourist-friendly, and available all over the city. Open all day.
  • Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家): Located near Liwan Lake. Go here for the atmosphere—you eat in a garden with streams and bridges.
  • White Swan Hotel: For a luxury experience with a view of the Pearl River.

2. The Sweet Life: Tang Shui (Sugar Water)

Cantonese people love their dessert soups. These aren't just sweet treats; they are often considered "medicinal" or cooling for the body in the humid heat.
Must Try:
  • Double Skin Milk (Shuang Pi Nai): A smooth milk pudding with two layers of skin.
  • Ginger Milk Curd: A magic trick where hot milk solidifies when poured into ginger juice. Spicy and sweet.
Where: Head to Wenming Road (文明路). It is known as the "Sugar Water Street" of Guangzhou.

3. Lunch & Dinner: The Heavy Hitters

For a proper sit-down meal, you want Cantonese BBQ (Siu Mei) and stir-fries.

Bing Sheng (The Char Siu King)

If you only go to one restaurant for dinner, make it Bing Sheng (炳胜). They are famous for their Black Char Siu (BBQ Pork). It’s fatty, sweet, savory, and melts on your tongue.
Logistics Note: The main Bing Sheng branch is near the CBD. It’s perfect for dinner after visiting the Canton Tower and Huacheng Square.

4. Late Night: Xiao Ye (Midnight Snacks)

Guangzhou doesn't sleep; it eats. "Xiao Ye" is the fourth meal of the day, usually starting after 10 PM. This is when the streets fill with the smell of wok hei (breath of the wok).
Top choice? Chaozhou Porridge (Casserole Porridge). It’s a bubbling clay pot of rice porridge filled with fresh seafood like crab and shrimp.

After a late-night feast, the night is still young. Discover the best bars and river cruises in our Guangzhou Nightlife Guide.

Where to Stay for Foodies?

If your main goal in Guangzhou is eating, do not stay in the CBD. You want to stay in the old districts (Liwan or Yuexiu) where the traditional flavors are concentrated.
