Explore Nature and Culture Across Western Hunan
Many travelers combine Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town (Fènghuáng Gǔchéng, 凤凰古城) into one trip. This guide covers the classic travel routes and insider tips to help you plan a smooth and memorable journey.
In general, spending only 1–2 days in Zhangjiajie is quite rushed—you’ll only scratch the surface. The scenic area is vast and complex, with tickets valid for up to 4 days , which hints at how much there is to see. If your schedule allows, we recommend 3–4 days in Zhangjiajie and 1–2 days in Fenghuang. This way, you can explore both the famous landmarks and hidden gems around Fenghuang.
2-Day Itinerary: Zhangjiajie & Fenghuang
[Day 1 in Zhangjiajie + Day 2 in Fenghuang]
If you have only one day in Zhangjiajie, your top priority should be Wulingyuan Scenic Area (Wǔlíngyuán, 武陵源). Within Wulingyuan, the highlight of all highlights is Tianzi Mountain (Tiānzǐ Shān, 天子山) , part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Day 1: Zhangjiajie
Spend the day exploring Wulingyuan. In the evening, catch the last direct bus to Fenghuang at 17:20 (¥80, around 4 hours). Stay overnight in Fenghuang. If you’re not too tired, take a night stroll through the lantern-lit alleys and riverside scenery of the ancient town.
Suggested Route in Zhangjiajie:
-
Full Experience Route :
Start at the foot of the mountain (Golden Whip Stream, Jīnbiān Xī, 金鞭溪) , hike upward, then take the cable car to Yuanjiajie (Yuánjiājiè, 袁家界). From there, descend and take the mini train through Ten-Mile Gallery (Shílǐ Huàláng, 十里画廊) to Tianzi Mountain , then ride the cable car back down. -
Energy-Saving Route :
Take a direct bus up to Tianzi Mountain , explore from the top down. This saves time, energy, and money. Afterward, either hike or take the mini train through Ten-Mile Gallery to exit.
Day 2: Fenghuang Ancient Town
Spend the day leisurely strolling through the town's cobblestone streets, stilt houses, and riverside cafés , or visit nearby Miao villages such as Miaoren Valley (Miáorén Gǔ, 苗人谷). Head out in the evening if needed.
3-Day Itinerary: Zhangjiajie (2 Days) + Fenghuang (1 Day)
Day 1: Tianzi Mountain & Surroundings
Take the cable car up to Tianzi Mountain , and stay overnight nearby. Spend the day exploring Wulong Village (Wǔlóngzhài, 乌龙寨) , Daguantai (大观台) , and Tianzi Peak. In the afternoon, descend to Ten-Mile Gallery.
Day 2: Yuanjiajie + Golden Whip Stream
Visit Yuanjiajie , then hike Luancuan Slope (Luàncuàn Pō, 乱窜坡) down to Golden Whip Stream.
-
If you're up for a challenge, you can hike the full route (1.5–2 hours).
-
If not, opt for the cable car and sightseeing train.
Alternatively, you can explore Tianmen Mountain (Tiānmén Shān, 天门山) instead. In the evening, transfer to Fenghuang and stay overnight.
Day 3: Fenghuang
Spend your day exploring Fenghuang Ancient Town or go off the beaten path to nearby scenic areas. Depart in the evening.
5-Day Itinerary: Zhangjiajie (3 Days) + Fenghuang (2 Days)
This relaxed schedule lets you fully explore the highlights of both destinations.
In Zhangjiajie, visit the classics—Tianzi Mountain , Yuanjiajie —and also lesser-known spots like Huangshizhai (Huángshízhài, 黄石寨) , a quieter area with equally stunning views.
In Fenghuang, in addition to the ancient town and nearby Miao villages, consider day trips or group tours to surrounding sites such as Furong Town (Fúróng Zhèn, 芙蓉镇).
Got a spare half-day in Zhangjiajie?
You can explore a few cultural sites in downtown Zhangjiajie , like Puguang Temple (Pǔguāng Sì, 普光寺) , Wumiao Temple , Tian Family Courtyard (Tián Jiā Lǎo Yuànzi, 田家老院子) , or the Tujia Folk Culture Park.
Hidden Water Route Through Western Hunan
Looking for a slower, more immersive experience? Consider traveling between destinations by boat , a traditional method in Western Hunan (Xiangxi, 湘西). Be warned:
-
Most routes operate only once daily
-
Departure times may be unreliable
-
Always confirm with locals upon arrival
-
If the boat journey becomes tiring, you can always switch to land transportation
Day 1: Wuqiangxi – Yuanling
Take a slow boat (¥40, 3 hrs) or a speedboat (¥60, 1.5 hrs) along the wide and peaceful Yuan River (Yuánjiāng, 沅江). Boats run from 7:00 to 14:00. Once in Yuanling , visit Longxing Lecture Temple (龙兴讲寺) or Phoenix Mountain. If you have time, explore Jiemu Stream (Jièmǔ Xī, 借母溪) —a scenic but remote area.
Day 2: Yuanling – Xiaoxi
At Yuanling, the Yuan River splits into the You River (Yǒushuǐ, 酉水) —narrower and greener. Take a 2-hour bus to Fengtan Pier , where a daily boat to Xiaoxi (¥5, 1.5 hrs) departs. Though once described as treacherous by writer Shen Congwen, the river is now calm. Xiaoxi is little known but boasts a national forest park and three gorges with rare flora, offering a quieter alternative to Zhangjiajie.
Day 3: Xiaoxi – Furong Town
From Xiaoxi, a single boat departs at 7:00 AM daily to Furong Town (¥20, 3 hrs). More boats are available on market days, but all depart early.
Day 4: Furong Town – Baojing
From Furong Town , a midday boat (¥35, 3 hrs) heads to Baojing. En route, you'll pass cliffside hanging coffins , a famous funerary tradition on the You River cliffs. Baojing was historically a Tusi (local chieftain) stronghold , with remnants of its ancient city still visible.
This route can also be done in reverse —just make sure to ask locals about boat schedules.
Travel Scam & Hassle Prevention Tips
-
Free shuttle buses operate within the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Don't get tricked into paying extra for so-called "deluxe air-conditioned" buses sold by unscrupulous guides.
-
You can ship your luggage between the train station and scenic area hotels. Costs about ¥10 per bag. Always confirm with your hotel beforehand to ensure they participate.
-
Ignore anyone on the train claiming to be from a travel agency. These "agents" often sell you to another agency for ¥100–150, with no proper service.
-
Fenghuang is a tourist hotspot , so scams are common. Always use licensed travel agencies and verify the credentials of guides and porters.
-
Standard price for Miao village day tours : ¥80–200
-
Avoid suspiciously cheap or overpriced options
-
To prevent price changes or forced shopping stops, prepay tours through reputable channels
-
-
Visiting Furong Town? Book a separate tour , not a combo “Mengdong River + Furong Town” one-day tour. These are often disorganized group tours with tight schedules and barely 1 hour at Furong. Drivers won’t wait.
-
Negotiate prices for everything—meals, accommodation, car rentals. A 20–30% discount is usually possible.
-
Peak seasons (Golden Week, summer holidays) mean higher prices and crowds. Pre-book transportation and hotels well in advance.
