How to Visit
1

Walk the river once in the morning and once at night

The Tuo River feels very different at different times of day. Morning is better for stilted houses, mist, and quiet water. Night is better for lights, reflections, and boats.

Tip:If you can only visit once, choose late afternoon into evening.
2

Walk first, then decide whether to take a boat

The riverside walk is already the main Fenghuang experience, so you do not need to buy a boat ticket immediately. Start around Hongqiao, the stepping stones, Wanming Tower, and Snow Bridge, then decide based on crowds, weather, and ticket price.

Tip:Walking covers most of the essential scenery even if you skip the boat.
3

Check whether you are buying a day cruise or night cruise

Tuo River boat products can vary by time and route. Day cruises are better for stilted houses and river views, while night cruises are better for lights and atmosphere.

Tip:Before paying, confirm the pier, route, duration, whether any performance is included, and whether the ticket is bundled with other old-town sites.
4

Do not stay locked to one photo spot

Nanhu Bridge works for a wider old-town view, Hongqiao is good for bridge and river shots, the opposite bank near Wanming Tower is useful for tower reflections, and the stepping stones are better for close views of the stilted houses.

Tip:If one place is too crowded, move to another bridge or the opposite bank.
5

Slow down near the water, especially after rain

The riverside has wet steps, stepping stones, and narrow paths close to the water. At night, do not focus only on your phone while taking photos.

Tip:With older travelers or children, choose steadier riverside paths and bridges instead of forcing the stepping-stone route in a crowd.
Highlights
  • The Tuo River is Fenghuang's main scenic axis, connecting the stilted houses, bridges, towers, and night views.
  • Morning walks are the best way to see the quieter side of the old town.
  • Night lights, boat shadows, and stilted-house reflections create Fenghuang's classic river scenes.
  • The stepping stones, Hongqiao, Snow Bridge, Nanhu Bridge, and Wanming Tower can form a complete river route.
  • A boat ride gives a water-level view, but walking still covers most of the essential scenery.
Insider Tips

Boat prices, departures, and night-cruise content may change, so check the product name and pier before buying.

If your budget is tight, walk the riverside and bridge viewpoints first; the boat is optional.

Restaurants in the most obvious riverside positions are often more expensive, so read menus and reviews before sitting down.

At night, do not block narrow paths or stop too long on the stepping stones for photos.

A riverside room comes with noise risk; stay away from bars and main paths if you want better sleep.
