What's the Best Way to Travel to Huangshan?

High-Speed Train

Since the Hefei–Fuzhou High-Speed Railway (Hefu Gaotie, 合福高铁) began operation, it only takes a little over 1 hour to reach Huangshan from Hefei and about 2.5 hours from Fuzhou. Nicknamed “the most beautiful high-speed railway in China,” this scenic route connects four famous mountains: Jiuhua (九华山), Huangshan (黄山), Sanqing (三清山), and Wuyi (武夷山), while passing through the charming Jiangnan towns of the ancient Huizhou region, including Jixi and Wuyuan.

With the launch of the Hangzhou–Huangshan High-Speed Railway (Hanghuang Gaotie, 杭黄高铁), it’s now just 1.5 hours from Hangzhou to Huangshan. Compared to other transportation options, high-speed trains are time-efficient, making it easy for travelers from nearby cities to plan a weekend getaway to the mountains.

By Air

Although small, Tunxi International Airport (屯溪国际机场) is well connected. It offers direct international flights to Seoul and Bangkok, and domestic flights to popular cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Kunming, and Chengdu. You can check real-time flight information via the official WeChat account of “Huangshan Tunxi International Airport.” The airport is located about 20 minutes by car from Tunxi Old Street (屯溪老街), and there are shuttle buses to the Huangshan Scenic Area during the day.

By Train

While traditional trains have become less popular with the rise of high-speed rail, they can still be a good option from certain cities. The train station is in the city center, and you can catch a shuttle bus from the station square to the South Gate of the Huangshan Scenic Area. Buses operate from 5:30 AM to 5:00 PM, departing when full or roughly every 30 minutes. The fare is 20 RMB, and the journey uses the expressway.

Long-Distance Bus

The main long-distance bus terminals—Huangshan City Bus Terminal (黄山市长途汽车站) and the Passenger Transport Main Station (客运总站)—are about 3 km from the city center. Taxis to downtown or the train station cost around 10 RMB. There are regular buses to major scenic spots; just buy your ticket at the station. To reach Tangkou (汤口), the gateway to the Huangshan Scenic Area, buses run from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, roughly every 20 minutes, and cost 20 RMB.

Self-Driving

In recent years, self-driving has become increasingly popular. As a long-established tourist destination, Huangshan is well connected by expressways and provincial roads. Just set your GPS and hit the road!

How to Get Around Huangshan City

1. Shuttle Buses

  • Pros : Convenient and cheap. Bus terminals near the high-speed rail station, city center, and train station offer routes to most attractions.

  • Cons : Limited schedules, slow travel, long waiting times. Some routes may require transfers to reach scenic areas.

2. Taxis

  • Pros : Easy to find at station exits, fast and convenient—no need to deal with bus transfers.

  • Cons : Higher fares, and there’s a risk of overcharging, especially during peak travel seasons. Be prepared to bargain.

3. Car Rental (Self-Driving)

  • Pros : Great for multi-day trips. You can travel on your own schedule and explore freely.

  • Cons : Mountain roads around Huangshan can be tricky and unsafe for unfamiliar drivers. Traffic fines are also a concern.

4. Private Car Hire

  • Pros : Door-to-door service with flexible scheduling—perfect for stress-free travel.

  • Cons : Typically available for 7-seaters or larger vehicles. Ideal for groups, but not budget-friendly for solo travelers or couples.

Huangshan has many scattered attractions. If you plan to visit multiple spots over several days—especially with kids or elderly family members—hiring a private car is a great option to save time and make the trip easier.

Transportation Between Scenic Areas

There are direct buses from the Huangshan Scenic Area to Xidi (西递) and Hongcun (宏村) villages. For other destinations, you'll likely need to use intercity public transport, which usually involves transfers and can be time-consuming. In these cases, renting a car or hiring a local driver is a smart choice. For short hops between neighboring attractions, taxis and local transport can also work well.
