On the second day of your Shaanbei Travel Route , set out from Jingbian toward Yulin, a drive of about 134 kilometers (1 hour 40 minutes). Shortly after leaving Jingbian, you’ll encounter the edge of the Mao Wusu Desert (毛乌素沙地, Máowūsù Shādì). Covering more than 40,000 square kilometers, it is one of China’s four great sandy lands.
Thanks to decades of reforestation and desert control, much of the Mao Wusu Desert has now been reclaimed by greenery. For travelers, this means you may not see the vast, desolate dunes typical of the Northwest, but rather a softer landscape where sand dunes, trees, and farmland blend together. It’s an unusual scene—and a great spot to stop for photos.
After about an hour and a half, you’ll reach Yulin , one of the largest cities in Shaanbei and historically a crucial frontier stronghold. Alternatively, you can set off early for your next destination. By taking a small detour of about 100 kilometers, you’ll reach Gaojiabao Ancient City (高家堡古城, Gāojiābǎo Gǔchéng). Historically, this walled town held significant military importance, comparable to Yulin itself. The defensive structures that still line the walls make this clear. Interestingly, traces of the Cultural Revolution remain here too—slogans and wall posters from the 1960s and 70s still linger on the old buildings, making visitors feel as if they’ve stepped back in time.
