The Ultimate Guangzhou Itinerary: How to Spend 1, 2, or 3 Days in Canton

4 min read

Planning a trip to Guangzhou? From Old Canton history to modern skylines and Shunde food trips, use our expert 3-day Guangzhou itinerary.

Guangzhou (formerly Canton) is often misunderstood. For many, it’s just a massive trade fair center or a transit hub. But to skip Guangzhou is to miss the beating heart of Southern China.

This is where the "Maritime Silk Road" began, where the revolutionary history of modern China took shape, and—most importantly—where the food is so good that people travel from around the world just for a single meal.

Whether you have a 24-hour layover or a full week, planning a route here can be tricky because the city is huge. The distance between the "Old City" (Xiguan) and the "New CBD" (Zhujiang New Town) is significant.

I’ve crafted this Ultimate Guangzhou Itinerary to help you navigate the clash between the old and the new efficiently.

💡 Before You Go

Guangzhou's metro system is excellent, but the summer heat is no joke. Before you pack your bags, make sure you know the basics about visas, payment apps (Alipay), and the best time to visit.

🏨 Where Should You Base Yourself?

This is the most common question I get. Should you stay in the historic Liwan district or the modern Tianhe CBD?

  • For History Buffs: Stay in Yuexiu or Liwan to be close to the temples and food.
  • For Skyline Views: Stay in Zhujiang New Town (Tianhe) for luxury hotels near the Canton Tower.

Day 1: The Soul of Old Canton (History & Architecture)

We start where Guangzhou began. Today is all about "Xiguan" (West Guan), the traditional commercial center of old Canton.

Morning: The "Yum Cha" Ritual

You cannot start a day in Guangzhou without "Morning Tea" (Zao Cha). It’s not just breakfast; it’s a lifestyle. Head to a classic teahouse like Panxi Restaurant or Dian Dou De.

What to order? Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gow) and Red Rice Rolls are mandatory.

Mid-Day: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall & Lychee Bay

Chen Family Ancestral Hall

After breakfast, visit the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. It is arguably the most impressive traditional building in the city, often called the "Folk Forbidden City" of the south. The roof sculptures are mind-blowing.

From there, take a stroll through Lychee Bay and Enning Road to see the traditional "Qilou" (Arcade buildings) and Xiguan Mansions.

Afternoon: Shamian Island

Cross the bridge to Shamian Island. This was the former British and French concession. It feels like you’ve suddenly teleported to Europe. It’s quiet, leafy, and full of colonial statues.

Day 2: The Modern Skyline & The Pearl River

Yesterday was about the past; today is about the future. Guangzhou’s skyline rivals Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Morning: Yuexiu Park

Start with a bit of green at Yuexiu Park to see the Five Rams Statue , the symbol of the city. It’s a great place to see locals doing Tai Chi and kicking shuttlecocks.

Afternoon: The New Axis (Zhujiang New Town)

Head to Huacheng Square. Here you are surrounded by giants: the IFC Tower, the CTF Finance Centre, and the Zaha Hadid-designed Opera House.

This is the perfect spot to view the Canton Tower (the "Slim Waist"). You can go up to the observation deck, but honestly, the view of the tower is better than the view from it.

Evening: Pearl River Night Cruise

Guangzhou comes alive at night. The best way to see it is from the water. A 60-minute cruise from Tianzi Wharf or Canton Tower Wharf is unforgettable.

Day 3: Foodie Pilgrimage or Theme Parks

For your third day, you have two excellent choices depending on your travel style.

Option A: The "Kung Fu" of Cooking in Shunde

If you are a foodie, take a 10-minute high-speed train to Shunde (Foshan). It is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and the birthplace of Cantonese chefs. The food here is even more traditional than in downtown Guangzhou.

Option B: Chimelong Paradise

Traveling with kids? The Chimelong Tourist Resort is world-class. Whether it's the Safari Park or the Circus, you can easily spend a whole day here.
