Plan at a glance

The lake, scenic area, and lodging have different boundaries

Shangdu Lake Eco-Tourism Scenic Area lies beside Shangdu Lake near Sanggendalai Town (桑根达来镇) in Zhenglan Banner, around Xiaozhagesitai Nao. The surrounding landscape includes lakes, wetlands, grassland, open woodland, and sandy terrain. Confirm separately where the scenic area's operating zone, hotel, and natural shoreline are open to visitors.

Check seasonal access and prices first

The scenic area has operated since 2009, with activities including lakeside cycling, camping, stargazing, and birdwatching. Confirm daily hours, admission, reservations, and rules for visiting the lakeshore at night with the operator. Visitor reviews on Ctrip have mentioned on-site charges; use the posted prices for the current rate. Before setting out, confirm the entrance open that day, parking location, and last admission time.

Choose your visit

Where lake, wetland, and sandy grassland meet

The lake, wetlands, grassland, open woodland, and sandy terrain meet here. On a clear day, follow an open stretch of shore for views of the water, meadow, and distant sand. Swans, swan geese, and bean geese live by the lake, making it a place for scenery and nature observation.

Lakeside cycling and outdoor observation

The scenic area has previously hosted a cycling route of about 12 kilometers around the lake, but the route is not guaranteed to follow the shore throughout or use a dedicated bike lane. Before setting out, confirm whether cyclists share the road with motor vehicles, which sections are open that day, and where to collect a bicycle. Near wetlands, pasture, or fences, stay on roads and at stops opened by the operator.

Sunset, stargazing, and overnight stays

Activities have included stargazing, camping, hiking, and birdwatching; you can plan a lakeside sunset near the end of a daytime visit. For stargazing or camping, book accommodation or a campsite authorized to receive guests, and ask about night walking limits, vehicle access times, and the return route. Do not go to the lakeshore at night without the operator's permission.

Build your day

A one- to two-hour stop by the lake

Enter through the entrance or parking area designated by the operator that day. First check which areas are open, then enjoy the accessible shoreline and return the way you came. Allow one to two hours for a short stop. If you plan to cycle, confirm the day's starting point and bicycle pickup location. Ask the operator whether the lakeside driving route is open and where legal parking is available.

A half-day ride and birdwatching visit

If cycling is open that day, confirm the starting point, bicycle pickup, and return arrangements with the operator before setting out. Follow the open route, watch birds only from permitted stopping points, and return to the starting point. A half day can include cycling, lakeside observation, and a rest. If the cycling route is closed or winds are strong, use an open walking path instead; do not ride onto sand, wetlands, or farm tracks.

Keep nighttime activities within the managed guest area

For sunset and stargazing, combine a daytime visit with an overnight stay at a hotel or campsite, and return to its managed area before dark. Get the operator's permission before walking by the shore at night or driving in or out. If access has not been confirmed, stay within the areas open to hotel or campsite guests after dark.

Get there

Confirm the public entrance with the operator

Shangdu Lake Eco-Tourism Scenic Area is beside Shangdu Lake near Sanggendalai Town in Zhenglan Banner, around Xiaozhagesitai Nao. You can try the number previously published for the scenic area, 15847966116, to confirm the current entrance, fees, parking, and roads. Shangdu Lake Wild Luxury Hotel can help you locate the lake area, but confirm the scenic area's entrance separately. If you are not a guest, do not drive into the hotel's accommodation area without permission.

Arrange supplies and a return ride before driving

There is no direct bus to the scenic area's entrance; driving or arranging a car in advance is more practical. Before setting out, confirm the road surface on the final stretch, whether a standard car can make the drive, and where parking is allowed by the shore. Stock up on drinking water, food, and fuel in Sanggendalai Town or Zhenglan Banner's county seat, and agree on a return time and pickup point.

Know before you go

Seasonal opening and facilities

The scenic area currently focuses on summer activities. The operator has previously proposed developing winter products, but winter opening and activities need to be checked each year. A visitor-center renovation is listed in the 2026–27 plan; a new visitor center and parking area are planned for after 2027. These are plans, not confirmed opening dates; ask the operator about existing facilities and services as well. Confirm hours, prices, reservations, shuttles, and dining in advance.

Night visits, camping, and weather

The lakeside can be windy at night, with temperatures dropping quickly. Before camping, confirm that the site accepts guests, how to contact staff at night, and the evacuation route; bring warm, windproof clothing. Do not drive onto unmarked roads, grassland, or sand to photograph the stars. After dark, stay in areas opened by the operator; do not light fires or drive alone into the backcountry.

Dining and Hongtu Nao'er (洪图淖尔) are separate plans

Ask about dining options, hours, and prices before leaving. You can bring drinking water and simple food, and plan a full meal in Sanggendalai Town or Zhenglan Banner's county seat. Hongtu Nao'er (洪图淖尔) is a separate wetland destination; its visitor center and ecological parking area are in the 2026–27 construction plan, so confirm whether the facilities are open before going. Backcountry roads between the two places are not part of the Shangdu Lake cycling route.
