Explore Yangshuo in 2 days: Yulong River rafting, Ten-Mile Gallery cycling, and must-visit spots like West Street and Moon Hill.

How to Explore Yangshuo: A 2-Day Travel Guide

Yangshuo is filled with stunning scenery and charming attractions. Most travelers spend around two days here. We recommend spending your first day in the town center, then heading to the Yulong River for bamboo rafting and cycling along the Ten-Mile Gallery on the second day.

Must-See #1: Bamboo Rafting on the Yulong River

Originating in Lingui County, the Yulong River is one of Yangshuo’s most breathtaking natural wonders. With peaceful countryside landscapes on both banks and majestic karst peaks, it offers postcard-perfect views. The northern section, near Putao Town, is especially popular among photographers. This section will guide you through the highlights and how to experience them.

Highlights Along the Yulong River

1. Shangri-La Scenic Area (世外桃源, Shìwài Táoyuán) — A Hidden Utopia Inspired by Poetry

Located in the northern part of the Yulong River near Baisha Town (about 15 km from Yangshuo center), this spot features lotus ponds, Swallow Lake, Swallow Cave, and cultural displays of the Dong, Zhuang, Yao, and Miao ethnic minorities. The design recreates the poetic utopia described in Tao Yuanming’s Peach Blossom Spring.

  • Admission: ¥60

  • Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

  • Getting There: Take a Yangshuo–Guilin bus and get off at the Shangri-La Scenic Area.

  • Bus Fare: Around ¥10–15

2. Fuli Bridge & Yulong Bridge — Step Into a Pastoral Painting

These two Ming Dynasty-era stone arch bridges, both over 500 years old, are local treasures. Fuli Bridge is the highest single-arch bridge in Yangshuo, while Yulong Bridge is the widest. In early spring, the surrounding fields bloom with canola flowers, creating a golden sea of color.

Fuli Bridge, located at the river’s source, remains undeveloped and free to visit. The local villagers are welcoming, and the area offers a tranquil countryside setting with lush mountains and rippling waters.

3. Fuli Town (福利镇, Fúlì Zhèn) — The Home of Traditional Painted Fans

Named for its abundance of lychee trees and picturesque homes, Fuli Town was once an important port on the Li River. The town retains a Mazu Temple (dedicated to the sea goddess) and is famous for its handcrafted painted fans, earning it the nickname “The No.1 Fan Town in China.” Free to visit.

Yulong River Bamboo Rafting

The full 16-kilometer river route is divided into several sections, so you can choose a stretch that fits your time and interest. The best time to raft is near sunset when the crowds have thinned, village chimneys puff smoke into the evening sky, and the fading light reflects on the water—just like drifting through an ancient Chinese painting.

Tips for Bamboo Rafting:

  1. Protect your electronics—splashes are common.

  2. Vendors sell ponchos and shoe covers, but they’re usually not necessary.

  3. If you arrive by bike, you can pay ¥10 to have your bike transported to the end pier, avoiding a return ride.

What's the Difference Between Yulong River and Li River Rafting?

  • Li River Rafts: Made from plastic tubes and powered by motors. They’re faster, noisier, and less expensive. Each raft holds up to 4 people. Most routes are in the Xingping area.

  • Yulong River Rafts: Made of real bamboo and manually operated. The ride is slow and peaceful, ideal for soaking in the scenery. Each raft seats 2 people, and while more expensive, it offers a more immersive and serene experience.

Must-See #2: The Ten-Mile Gallery (Shili Hualang, 十里画廊)

The Ten-Mile Gallery isn’t a single attraction but a scenic route near Moon Hill, filled with picturesque spots that look straight out of a painting. Sites along the way include Butterfly Spring, Gongnong Bridge, Dragon Pool Ancient Village, the Big Banyan Tree, and Moon Hill.

Highlights Along the Ten-Mile Gallery

1. Butterfly Spring (蝴蝶泉, Húdié Quán) — Ethnic Performances in Nature

Named after a butterfly-shaped stalactite and the spring beneath it, the site features performances by the Miao and Dong ethnic groups. A large butterfly sculpture marks the entrance, and the small cave, hanging bridge, and mountain slide make it popular with children.

  • Admission: ¥36

  • Recommended Time: 1 hour

2. The Big Banyan Tree (大榕树, Dà Róngshù) — Wish for Everlasting Love

Featured in the famous Chinese film Liu Sanjie , this 1,400-year-old tree witnessed the heroine toss an embroidered ball to her beloved. The site has become a symbol of romantic devotion.

  • Admission: ¥22

  • Recommended Time: 1 hour

3. Moon Hill (月亮山, Yuèliàng Shān) — A Natural Arch Resembling the Moon

Atop this hill is a large natural rock arch that resembles a full moon. As you drive by, the arch appears to transform from crescent to full and back again depending on your viewing angle—an enchanting optical illusion.

  • Admission: ¥22

4. Gongnong Bridge — Great Viewpoint of Karst Landscapes

From here, you can admire both the Jinbao River and Yulong River, as well as layers of karst peaks. It's also the endpoint of many Yulong River rafting routes. In the area, you’ll find opportunities for hiking, caving, rock climbing, and more.

5. Dragon Pool Ancient Village (龙潭古村, Lóngtán Gǔcūn)

With over 500 years of history, the reconstructed Ming and Qing-style buildings still retain the charm of an ancient village.
