How to Visit
1

Book through the Palace Museum channel before the visit

The Forbidden City is reservation-based and tickets can sell out quickly in peak periods. Secure your slot before planning the rest of the day.

Do not rely on same-day availability
2

Enter from Meridian Gate and commit to a south-to-north route

The standard first-visit route runs from Meridian Gate (午门) through the central axis and exits at Shenwu Gate (神武门). This avoids route confusion in a very large site.

Meridian Gate is the only public entrance
3

Add one side hall or paid gallery instead of trying to see everything

Choose either the main axis plus one quieter side section or add the Treasure Gallery / Clock Gallery if they matter to you most.

Trying to cover the entire complex in one visit usually lowers the experience quality
4

Exit toward Jingshan or the moat only if energy remains

After Shenwu Gate, continue to Jingshan Park for a panoramic view over the palace roofs, or keep it simple and leave directly if your legs are already done.

The site is much more physically demanding than many first-time visitors expect
Highlights
  • The most important imperial palace complex in China
  • Classic central-axis halls including Hall of Supreme Harmony
  • Strong pairing with Jingshan Park for the best roofscape view
  • Seasonal visual payoff from autumn foliage and winter snow
  • High-value first-time Beijing essential
Insider Tips

Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; the walking load is real

If you want a calmer arrival, use Jinyu Hutong Station (金鱼胡同站) and approach from the east side

Do not expect to see all collections in one trip

Security and ID checks can add time, especially on holidays

For a cleaner finish, avoid leaving your visit until the hottest mid-afternoon hours in summer
