Huangshan Travel Guide: Scenic Spots, Tickets, Transport & Itineraries

Why Visit Mount Huangshan?

With legendary titles like “No mountain is worth seeing after visiting the Five Great Mountains, and no Five Great Mountains are worth seeing after visiting Huangshan,” along with designations such as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site , a Global Geopark , and “the most spectacular mountain in China ,” it's no surprise that Mount Huangshan (黄山, Huángshān) is a must-see destination for many travelers.
Wondering what the best scenic spots are? Where to eat and stay? How to avoid the crowds? This guide has got you covered.

Highlights of the Huangshan Scenic Area

The most iconic features of Mount Huangshan are its strangely-shaped pine trees , rolling sea of clouds , and bizarre granite peaks. The famous Welcoming Pine (Yíngkè Sōng) stands tall on a rock ledge, its outstretched arms appearing to greet visitors. When the wind blows, waves of clouds surge like a celestial ocean; when the wind dies down, it becomes a tranquil sea where mountaintops rise like boats adrift in the sky.
If you're lucky, you might catch the awe-inspiring scenes of sunrise over a sea of clouds or the sun encircled by mountain peaks —both are breathtaking natural spectacles. There's a saying: “Huangshan is beautiful in all seasons, but winter is best.” In the colder months, visitors can also enjoy the rare sight of rime frost on the trees—something typically seen only in southern Chinese mountain ranges. And if you’re feeling tired after all the hiking, soak your stress away at the Huangshan Hot Springs , considered one of China’s top three famous hot springs.

When to Visit Huangshan for Fewer Crowds and Better Value

Mount Huangshan can get very crowded during peak seasons and especially on public holidays, when it becomes shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists. Prices for hotels, private transfers, and meals also spike, and bookings must be made well in advance. All these factors add up to a much more expensive trip.
However, according to official pricing for admission, cable cars, and accommodations, the off-season runs from December 20 to January 20. During this period, you'll find lower prices and fewer tourists —making it the best time for budget-friendly travel.
Some travelers mistakenly believe the mountain is closed in winter. That’s not true! While Tiandu Peak (Tiāndū Fēng) , Lotus Peak (Liánhuā Fēng) , and the Xihai Grand Canyon (Xīhǎi Dàxiágǔ) are closed for safety reasons, the rest of the scenic area remains open and fully accessible.

  • The West Gate involves going to the Xiaolingjiao Ticket Office , then taking a shuttle bus to the Diao Qiao An trailhead for hiking up the mountain.

  • There are also various combo tickets including cable cars—choose based on your needs.

Dining on the Mountain

There are hotels and small shops on Huangshan, so eating isn’t a problem. However, since all food is carried up by hand, prices on the mountain are noticeably higher than at the base.
  • Hotel buffet meals: around 120–160 RMB
  • Fast food: about 60 RMB
  • Dishes ordered in hotel restaurants: around 200 RMB per person
If you find prices too high, it’s perfectly fine to bring your own snacks like instant noodles, biscuits, bread, or ready-to-eat meals.

Accommodation on Huangshan

Which hotel to choose?
The Huangshan Scenic Area is vast, and one day is usually not enough to explore its grandeur fully, so most visitors stay overnight. Main hotels on the mountain include Guangmingding Mountain Lodge and six hotels managed by Huangshan Tourism Development Group: Beihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, Xihai Hotel, Paiyunxing Hotel, Baiyun Hotel, Yupinglou Hotel , plus Bai’e Mountain Villa.
Because of their convenient locations and room options, most independent travelers prefer Guangmingding Mountain Lodge, Baiyun Hotel, and Paiyunxing Hotel.
Since Huangshan receives many visitors and mountain accommodations are limited, book your hotel in advance. Prices fluctuate by season, holidays, weekends (Friday and Saturday), and weekdays (Sunday to Thursday).
There are also bunk beds for sale on the mountain (at 701 Launch Platform, second floor of Bai’e Mountain Villa, separated by gender) for around 200 RMB on regular days. Standard double rooms usually start at 1,000 RMB or more. Note that camping on the mountain is currently not allowed.

Two-Day Tour

Route: Start from the South Gate back mountain (Yungu Temple) and descend from the front mountain (Ciguang Pavilion), or vice versa.

Have lunch and rest at Baiyun Hotel. In the afternoon, explore parts of the Tianhai and Xihai Scenic Areas. Watch the sunset at Paiyun Pavilion, then return to your hotel for the night (recommended hotels: Beihai, Shilin, or Xihai).

Wake up early to watch the sunrise. Then hike through the Xihai Grand Canyon — Dawn Pavilion — Cool Terrace — Lion Peak — Monkey Gazing at the Sea — Shixin Peak — Bai’e Ridge. From Bai’e Ridge, take the cable car down.

Tips on Route Planning

Your choice of starting and ending points should depend on the hotel you book. A common recommendation is: ascend from the front mountain, descend from the back mountain, and stay overnight at Beihai or Shilin Hotels. This plan avoids backtracking and places you in good locations for watching sunrise and sunset.
If you choose to ascend from the back mountain and descend from the front mountain, simply reverse the visiting order. However, in this case, it is not recommended to stay at Beihai or Shilin Hotels. Instead, consider staying at the new building of Baiyun Hotel or Guangmingding Mountain Lodge.
