Plan at a glance
An independent visit to a Qing Dynasty temple
Youshun Temple is at No. 15, Section 2, Xinhua Road, Shuangta District, Chaoyang. It is a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Founded during the Kangxi reign, the temple's central axis includes an Archway (牌楼), Temple Gate (山门), Hall of Heavenly Kings (天王殿), Sutra Repository (藏经阁), and Mahavira Hall (大雄宝殿). The outer wall of the Mahavira Hall has 27 stone carvings, and there are eight stone lions on the grounds. Check on-site descriptions for artifact dates and whether they are originals or reproductions, and check the day's notices for which halls are open.
Allow time for the temple; count the old-town walk separately
A short visit inside the temple takes about 30 minutes; allow about 1 hour to look more closely at the architecture. These are planning estimates. The areas open to visitors and the time needed depend on the day's arrangements.
For an old-town walk, follow South Pagoda → Youshun Temple → Guandi Temple → Murong Street → North Pagoda. The route is about 3 km and takes 2–3 hours for walking, exterior views, and brief stops. Add more time if you plan to visit the museums or temples in depth.

Choose your visit
30 minutes: follow the central axis
This short route covers the main temple courtyards, passing the archway, mountain gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Sutra Repository, and the exterior of the Mahavira Hall. Follow on-site directions for which halls you may enter, and stay out of managed areas.
Pause at the exterior stone carvings, the stone lions at the entrance, and the plaques. Use on-site descriptions for the subjects and dates of the carvings and for current display details.
One hour: look more closely at the courtyards and architecture
If you have more time, see the side courtyards and exterior views of side halls that are open that day. Heritage information also lists the Seven-Bay Hall, Guandi Hall, opera stage, and bell and drum towers; check the day's notices for which buildings visitors can enter.
The temple is built of brick and timber. View the red walls, halls, and carvings from areas open to visitors. Photography rules inside the halls are not stated in one consistent current guide; check signs at each entrance. Without explicit permission, do not photograph Buddha images, worship activities, or restricted areas, and do not use flash.
Build your day
Short temple route: entrance to the central axis and back
First confirm which areas are open, then follow the central axis from the archway through the mountain gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, and Sutra Repository to the exterior of the Mahavira Hall. Spend about 30–60 minutes in open areas, then return to the exit the same way. If a hall is closed, do not enter the restricted space.
Steps and access boundaries depend on on-site arrangements. If you use a mobility aid, ask the staff about the entrance, steps, and routes open that day.
Old-town walk: check each stop separately
From South Pagoda, walk to Youshun Temple, then follow your map to Guandi Temple, Murong Street, and North Pagoda. Check the entrance, opening hours, and last-entry time for each stop separately. If a venue is temporarily closed, shorten the route.
Youshun Temple is closed on Mondays. Before walking, check the day's notices and last-entry times for the other venues. If you arrive late, prioritize the places that are still open.
Get there
Address and bus
For navigation, search for “佑顺寺” (Youshun Temple) or “双塔区新华路二段15号” (No. 15, Section 2, Xinhua Road, Shuangta District). A 2025 bus notice listed Route 16 at the Youshun Temple stop; schedules may have changed, so check the stop and service interval on the day of travel.
Check bus schedules, direct service, and fares from Chaoyang Station or the airport before traveling. In a taxi, give the driver the temple name and address, and confirm your pick-up point and return plan.
Entry and nearby boundaries
North Pagoda Museum, South Pagoda, and Guandi Temple are separate sites, each with its own entrance. Before walking between them, check opening hours, entrance locations, and parking arrangements separately.
If driving, confirm nearby parking spaces and fees in advance. Plan meals at other stops on the old-town walking route.
