Geology and natural heritage

Hexigten World Geopark Museum is in Jingpeng Town. Search for the museum by name in your navigation app, or use the address published by the museum to confirm the map pin. The galleries cover geological heritage, ecology, mineral resources, and local history. Before driving around the banner, you can learn about Asihatu Stone Forest, Dali Lake, Huanggangliang, glacial landforms, and volcanic landscapes.

Admission and opening hours

Admission is free. Opening hours and midday visitor services may change; call 0476-5235237 before setting out to confirm the day's hours, reservation requirements, and entry registration.

Visit duration

Allow about 30–60 minutes for a quick visit focused on geological heritage and mineral resources. A full visit takes about 1.5–2 hours and can include ecology, local history, and a 4D film. Gallery names, locations, and visiting order follow the on-site guide.

Choose your visit

Stone forests, lakes, glaciers, and volcanoes

The geological heritage galleries explain glacial, volcanic, and granite landforms, using terrain models and landscape relief models to show regional features such as Asihatu Stone Forest, Dali Lake, and Huanggangliang. If you plan to drive between different landform sites, start here for geographic and geological context. The scale models and designated touchable rocks also work well for a family learning visit.

Rock specimens and the 4D film

The mineral resources galleries display minerals and rock specimens. Some are available to touch; follow the case labels to choose an interactive exhibit. The 4D film uses moving images to show how landforms developed. Check the day's schedule and whether there is a fee inside the museum.

Cultural displays and architecture

The museum also covers local history and ecology through panels, photographs, and models. Its exterior draws on the forms of Asihatu Stone Forest; look for the textures and shapes across the façade. Gallery names and layout inside follow the on-site guide.

Build your day

Quick route | about 30–60 minutes

Start with geology themes such as glaciers, volcanoes, and granite landforms, then see the mineral and rock specimens. Follow the museum guide and signs back to the exit. If time is limited, prioritise the regional models and interactive specimens that are open to visitors.

Full route | about 1.5–2 hours

Use the museum guide to visit geological heritage, ecology, mineral resources, and local history. If a 4D screening is available that day, check the showtime before arranging your visit order. Follow the signs back to the exit; use the day's guide for gallery names, floors, and sequence.

Handcrafts and stamps

The museum has a workshop and a stamp station for a hands-on activity or souvenir. Activities and available stamps depend on what is open that day. If the 4D film, workshop, or a guided tour is a priority, ask about its hours when you arrive and plan your route around it.

Get there

Directions and driving

Search for “克什克腾世界地质公园博物馆” (Hexigten World Geopark Museum). It is opposite the banner government offices in Jingpeng Town. Driving is the main way to reach the museum from central Chifeng or other sites in the banner, and it can be combined with the Dada Line (达达线) or Re'a Line (热阿线) scenic routes.

Parking and nearby sites

Free parking is available in the museum grounds. Use the museum name as your driving destination. Hexigten Banner Museum is next door but is a separate museum; Qingning Temple is also nearby and can be visited separately if it is open.

Public transport

If travelling by bus, check the walking distance from your Jingpeng Town stop to the museum entrance and confirm the return timetable. Use the museum name in a map app to check the last leg, and ask in advance about town and village bus departure times.

Know before you go

Opening on the day

Call ahead to confirm opening hours and whether the museum closes at midday. If you plan to arrive around lunchtime, ask whether it will be receiving visitors before arranging lunch or another stop.

What to expect and guided tours

The museum mainly uses educational models, text, photographs, and scale models. Fossils and rare physical specimens are relatively limited, so the visit is best suited to learning about the region's geology. Free guided-tour times may change; call 0476-5235237 to ask about the day's schedule and whether tours or audio guides are available in English. You can also ask inside about renting an audio guide.

Food and photography

In Jingpeng Town, consider Taling Mongolian Restaurant (塔林蒙餐), known for hand-held boiled lamb (手把肉), stir-fried eggs with Mongolian wild onions (沙葱炒鸡蛋), and Mongolian milk tea. Mengjile Huoyang Shidai (蒙吉勒活羊时代) serves grilled lamb trotters, Mongolian blood sausage, and nai jiaokou (奶嚼口), a traditional fermented cream. Check restaurant addresses, opening hours, and wait times on the day. Follow the signs when photographing the building exterior or mineral displays.
