Steppe bronzes and Central Plains ritual objects
The “Steppe Bronzes” exhibition introduces northern steppe bronzes excavated from the Xiaoheishigou burial site. Distinctive pieces include the bronze square ding known as “青铜刖人守囿方鼎” and the “许季姜” bronze gui, a ritual vessel associated with Central Plains nobility and excavated on the grassland. Their origins offer a way to explore cultural exchange between the steppe and the Central Plains. Use the on-site guide for the gallery floor.
Liao Zhongjing: A Secondary Capital
Exhibitions such as “Liao Zhongjing, the Ancient Capital” explain the city's history as a secondary capital of the Liao dynasty and present its layout, modelled on Bianliang, the Northern Song capital. Follow the on-site guide between related displays to learn about both early steppe bronze culture and the Liao capital in one museum visit.
Inscriptions, archaeology, and architecture
The “大王记结亲事碑” stele records a marriage alliance between early Khitan and Xi groups and offers a specific example of relations among peoples during the Liao period. Visitors interested in archaeological sites can consider the Xiaoheishigou burial mounds and Youbeiping Heicheng ruins as separate later stops; each requires its own transport. The museum has a traditional-style exterior, and the building and Daming Pagoda can be photographed from outside.
Build your day
Quick museum route | about 30–60 minutes
At the entrance, use the on-site guide to find “Steppe Bronzes.” Focus on the bronze square ding “青铜刖人守囿方鼎” and the “许季姜” bronze gui. Then follow the gallery signs to “Liao Zhongjing, the Ancient Capital” and return to the exit along the indoor signs. If time is limited, prioritise these two themes and their representative objects.
Museum and nearby pagodas | allow separate transfer time
First learn about Liao Zhongjing and steppe bronzes in the museum, then walk to Daming Pagoda in the grounds to see its exterior reliefs. If you continue to the Jin-era Small Pagoda and Half-Section Pagoda, check the road routes and distances on a current map before arranging a car or hired driver. Agree on stops and the return pickup point with the driver in advance.
On-site interpretation
Free guided-tour times may change; call 0476-4050311 to ask about that day's schedule and whether tours or audio guides are available in English. Audio guides may also be available for rent. If you want a closer explanation of the inscriptions and exhibits, check whether guide services are operating before your visit.

Driving from central Chifeng
From central Chifeng, drive to “宁城县天义镇南城村辽中京博物馆” in your navigation app. Allow for your exact starting point and current road conditions. Free parking is available at the museum. If you plan to visit nearby pagodas afterward, check the roads, parking, and return pickup points first.
