Four permanent galleries

Chifeng Museum is at 10A Fuhe Street, Songshan District, Chifeng. Its four permanent galleries are Sunrise over Hongshan (《日出红山》), Ancient Bronze Culture (《古韵青铜》), Khitan Splendor (《契丹华韵》), and One Family in Harmony (《和同一家》). They cover local prehistoric cultures, steppe bronze culture, Liao culture, and the history of northern peoples from the Jin through Qing dynasties. The museum building has a floor area of about 11,000 square metres, with more than 4,000 square metres of exhibition space. The four galleries display more than 800 artefacts and other exhibits, including sets of objects.

Admission and opening hours

Admission is free and no reservation is required. Visitors register at entry with an ID card or by scanning a QR code. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am–6:00 pm, with last admission at 5:30 pm. It is closed on Mondays except on statutory public holidays.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for a focused visit or 2–2.5 hours to see all four galleries in detail. For the focused route, aim to enter by 4:30 pm; for the full route, aim for 3:30 pm. Last admission is 5:30 pm and the museum closes at 6:00 pm.

Choose your visit

Prehistory and steppe bronzes

Sunrise over Hongshan focuses on prehistoric culture. Its C-shaped jade dragon is a replica, and the gallery also displays a phoenix-shaped pottery cup. Next, Ancient Bronze Culture presents objects related to the Xiajiadian culture, including a painted pottery li vessel decorated with shell inlay. These two galleries suit visitors interested in Hongshan culture, early settlements, and bronze craftsmanship.

Khitan Liao culture and later dynasties

Khitan Splendor introduces Liao history and culture through exhibits such as Liao sancai ceramics and cockscomb-shaped flasks (鸡冠壶). One Family in Harmony presents the history of northern peoples from the Jin through Qing dynasties; a key exhibit is the pearl dragon robe of Princess Gulun Rongxian from the Qing dynasty. Visit these galleries in sequence to follow changes in the Chifeng region over time.

Choose by interest

Spend longer in the first two galleries if you are most interested in prehistory and bronze objects. If Khitan and Liao history or later periods are your priority, begin with Khitan Splendor. With enough time, first-time visitors can follow all four galleries in chronological order to trace the region's history.

For a separate museum focused on Hongshan Culture and its archaeology, see Hongshan Culture Museum.

Build your day

Focused route | about 1–1.5 hours

Start at Sunrise over Hongshan, then continue through Ancient Bronze Culture, Khitan Splendor, and One Family in Harmony. In each gallery, begin with the introduction and selected highlights to get a quick overview of all four themes. Follow the signs back to the exit. This route works for visitors with limited time who still want to see every gallery. If you arrive close to last admission, first confirm that entry is still possible, then prioritise the galleries that interest you most.

Full route | about 2–2.5 hours

Follow the sequence Sunrise over Hongshan → Ancient Bronze Culture → Khitan Splendor → One Family in Harmony. Read the display panels and spend time with representative objects in the Hongshan, steppe bronze, Liao, and Jin-to-Qing galleries. At the end, follow the signs back to the exit.

Free public tours

Free guided tours are scheduled for 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Popular sessions may require arriving early. Tour times can change; ask whether English-language tours or audio guides are available that day.

Get there

Address and buses

Search for “赤峰博物馆” (Chifeng Museum) in your navigation app, or enter “赤峰市松山区富河街 10A.” Several city bus routes serve the area; check routes and stops from your exact starting point. For the return trip, search again with the museum address as your starting point to find the correct route and boarding stop.

Taxi, driving, and parking

A taxi or drive from central Chifeng takes about 10–15 minutes, depending on your starting point and traffic. Check the journey separately if you are leaving from the railway station or a hotel. Free parking is available at the museum; set “Chifeng Museum” or “10A Fuhe Street” as your driving destination.

Know before you go

Entry documents

Visitors must register at entry. If you are travelling with a foreign passport, contact the museum before your visit to confirm the registration process and which documents to present.

Exhibits on display

The displays may change. If you are making a special trip to see a particular object, confirm that it is on display that day. Check the label for the object's name and any note that it is a replica or reconstruction.

Food and accessibility

Dining options close to the museum are limited. In the city, you could consider Guangli Duijia (广利对夹), Chengnan Duijia (城南对夹), or Siqin Ama Mongolian Restaurant (斯琴阿妈蒙古餐厅). For local flavours, try shouba rou (手把肉), a traditional Mongolian boiled lamb dish, or Chifeng-style savoury guobaorou (咸口锅包肉), crispy pork with a garlicky, savoury sauce. Choose a restaurant based on its location and check its opening hours. If you need to take photographs or require a step-free route, contact the museum in advance to confirm its rules and access.
