Quick Facts
Ticket
Erhai Lake itself is not a single gated ticket attraction. Budget separately for bikes, electric carts, parking, boat rides, cafes, and individual villages or islands.
Hours
The lake and public shoreline areas are outdoor spaces. Plan most visits during daylight; villages, cafes, boat services, and corridor transport keep separate hours.
Transport
No metro. From Dali Old Town, use ride-hailing, local buses, bikes, electric scooters, chartered cars, or official sightseeing buses depending on the shore section.
Duration
Half day for one shore section; 1-2 days for a relaxed loop
Best Time
Mar-May and Sep-Nov; clear winter days are good for gulls and visibility
Visitors
All ages
How to Visit
1

Choose one shore instead of rushing the full loop

The full Erhai loop is long. If you only have one day, choose the west shore for cycling and villages, or the east shore for a car route with wider lake views.

Tip:Trying to do every stop in one day usually makes the route tiring.
2

Use the west shore for a lighter first visit

A practical first route is Dali Old Town, Longkan Pier, Caicun, the ecological corridor, and Xizhou. It has short transfers and many places to stop.

Tip:This is easier than starting with the full east-shore drive.
3

Use a car or chartered driver for the east shore

The east shore links Shuanglang, Xiaoputuo, Wenbi Village, and Jinsuo Island. Distances are longer, so a car route is more efficient than cycling from the old town.

Tip:Confirm parking and pickup points before entering villages.
4

Build the day around weather and light

Erhai looks very different under gray skies. Check the forecast, start early for calm water, and keep sunset stops flexible if clouds move in.

Tip:Clear weather matters more than adding one extra stop.
Highlights
  • Dali's main lake landscape and the anchor for many nearby villages
  • West-shore cycling routes with villages, wetlands, and lake paths
  • East-shore drives with open water views, Xiaoputuo, and Wenbi Village
  • Easy pairing with Dali Old Town, Xizhou, Shuanglang, and Caicun
  • Winter gulls and clear highland light when the weather is good
Insider Tips

Do not underestimate the distance around the lake; split west and east shores if you want a relaxed trip.

Use sun protection even on cool days because the lake area has strong UV exposure.

Check whether rented scooters are allowed on your exact route before paying.

If using ride-hailing, set a precise pickup point because some village roads are narrow or restricted.

Carry water and a layer; wind near the lake can feel cold after sunset.
