How to Visit
1

Start from the South Gate

Use the South Gate as an easy entry point, then walk north through the main old-town streets. This gives you a simple route without too much backtracking.

Tip:It is also one of the easiest places for taxis and ride-hailing pickup.
2

Walk Fuxing Road first, then leave the main street

Fuxing Road is the central tourist street, but it can feel repetitive. Use it for orientation, then turn into smaller lanes for quieter shops, courtyards, and cafes.

Tip:The side lanes usually feel more relaxed than the main commercial strip.
3

Add Wuhua Tower as a landmark stop

Wuhua Tower works well as a middle point in the walk. It helps you understand the layout of the old town and gives a clear place to regroup.

Tip:Come back in the evening if you want the lit-up street atmosphere.
4

Finish near the North Gate market area

If you want a more local stop, continue toward the North Gate market area for snacks, fruit, and daily-life scenes instead of eating only on the main tourist street.

Tip:This is a better place to look for simple local food.
Highlights
  • A compact old-town area that is easy to explore on foot
  • Good base for a first evening in Dali before visiting Erhai or Cangshan
  • Main streets for quick orientation, with quieter lanes nearby
  • Useful food and market stops around the North Gate area
  • Easy to combine with Wuhua Tower, cafes, and nearby day-trip transport
Insider Tips

Do not plan the whole day around the old town if your time in Dali is short; 2-3 focused hours is enough for many visitors.

Visit early morning for quiet streets, or come after sunset if you want a livelier atmosphere.

Avoid choosing restaurants only from the busiest main street; side lanes and market areas are usually more interesting.

Ask the price before photo shoots, flower gifts, street performances, or animal-photo services.

Stay near a gate if you have luggage, because wheeling bags through the old-town streets can be inconvenient.
