Entrance, ticket and reservation
Mount Hengshan (Tianfengling, 天峰岭) is in Hunyuan County, Datong. Visitors first go to the Hengshan Visitor Centre (恒山游客中心) for the unified transfer; private cars cannot drive directly to the trailhead. The admission ticket costs about CNY 45. Real-name reservations can be made 1–3 days ahead through the “北岳云游 (Beiyue Yunyou)” or “恒山景区 (Hengshan Scenic Area)” mini-programs. The high season is roughly April to October, and typical hours are 08:00–18:00.
How much time to allow
The shuttle from the Visitor Centre to the halfway point at Zhenwu Temple/Hengzong costs about CNY 20. The regular half-mountain hiking route takes about 3–4 hours, the cable-car combination about 2–3 hours and the full hike about 6–7 hours. Mount Hengshan admission, the shuttle, the cable car and Hanging Temple access are separate arrangements; the Visitor Centre is the transfer starting point, not a combined-ticket pass.

Summit and temples along the way
The main peak, Tianfengling (天峰岭), is 2,016.1 metres high. Its summit stone stele is the main photo stop, and on a clear day you can look over the Datong Plain and towards Hanging Temple. From Zhenwu Temple/Hengzong (真武庙/恒宗), the trail passes Daoist sites such as Chunyang Palace (纯阳宫) and Guolao Xianji (果老仙迹). This suits visitors who enjoy mountain scenery, Daoist architecture and a moderate hike.
Choose by fitness and walking preference
Visitors with ordinary fitness who want both mountain views and a summit can take the shuttle to the halfway point and hike from there. Those wanting less walking can take the cable car from the halfway point to Kuixing Tower (魁星楼) and walk on to the summit. The full hike requires more time and continuous climbing, and suits experienced hikers who can manage the 7.8-kilometre ascent and return.
Two starting points on the mountain
Zhenwu Temple/Hengzong (真武庙/恒宗) is the hiking start after the shuttle ride, while Kuixing Tower (魁星楼) is the mountain route point near the cable-car upper station. They involve different walking distances and costs. Once you choose a route, use the same transport arrangement for the descent and return to the Visitor Centre.
Build your day
A 3–4-hour half-mountain hiking route
Buy a shuttle ticket at the Visitor Centre and ride to Zhenwu Temple/Hengzong (真武庙/恒宗). Follow the regular stone steps for about 1.5–2 hours to the Tianfengling (天峰岭) summit, spend time at the stone stele and summit views, then descend by the same route to the trailhead and take the shuttle back to the Visitor Centre. The final steps to the summit are steep, so leave time for the descent and shuttle on the return.
A 2–3-hour cable-car combination
Transfer to Zhenwu Temple/Hengzong (真武庙/恒宗) at the halfway point, then take the cable car to Kuixing Tower (魁星楼) when it is operating. Walk about 40 minutes to the summit, then return by cable car and shuttle. This costs more than hiking alone, and queues or weather-related stoppages can change the actual duration. When buying tickets, confirm admission, the shuttle and the return cable car separately.
A 6–7-hour full hike
For the full hike, enter at the Sanqing Hall/Zhenwu Temple (三清殿/真武庙) checkpoint at the foot of the mountain and follow the newly built stone steps for about 7.8 kilometres. Walking and photographing along the way, the ascent takes about 3.5–4 hours and the descent about 2–2.5 hours. Back routes that are not formally open are not part of a hiking, photography or summit plan; return by the regular road within opening hours.
Get there
Direct shuttle and bus
Direct tourist shuttles serve stops in Datong's old city and at Datong South Railway Station. The ride takes about 1.5 hours and costs about CNY 39, ending at the Hengshan Visitor Centre. You can also take bus 901 or a coach to Hunyuan County, then take a taxi to the Visitor Centre; arrange the final public-transport leg separately.
Driving and transfer
Navigate to the Hengshan Visitor Centre, park there and change to the shuttle. Vehicles cannot drive directly to the halfway trailhead or Kuixing Tower. Hanging Temple also uses this centre for transfers, but Mount Hengshan admission, the shuttle, cable car and mountain route are each counted separately. Return to the Visitor Centre before arranging a county-town stop or another attraction.
Know before you go
Wind, steps and queues
Wind is strong at the summit, and the final steps are steep. On weekends and holidays, queues for the summit stele area or cable car may exceed 1 hour. Wear shoes with good grip and choose a route that matches your fitness. Around 08:00 or after 16:00 may be quieter, but late arrivals must confirm the remaining mountain, cable-car and return time.
Weather, photography and return
When the cable car is running and visibility is good, the valley and Hanging Temple can be viewed from above. Sunset and stargazing are optional experiences only when weather and opening conditions permit, so do not plan to remain on the mountain at night for them. Photograph the summit stele, Daoist sites and cable-car views from regular paths; closed back trails, exposed edges and areas without railings are off limits.
