Location, entrance and tickets
Yungang Grottoes is at 1 Yungang Town in Yungang District, about 20 kilometres from central Datong. The main entrance is the Visitor Service Centre. The full ticket costs CNY 120, with half-price student tickets. Real-name reservations are required through the official “云冈石窟文旅” or “云冈研究院” mini-program; in the high season, tickets can be booked 1–15 days in advance.
Opening and visit length
Typical high-season hours are 07:30–18:00, with entry stopping at 18:00. Allow about 3–4 hours for a complete visit or 1–2 hours for a short route. The site follows a linear visitor flow; the exit is west of the entrance, and walking back to the entrance after leaving takes about 20–30 minutes. Include that distance when arranging your return transport.

Representative caves and artistic clues
Cave 6 is known for its central pagoda pillar and carvings of stories from the life of the Buddha. Cave 12 contains musicians, apsaras and instrument figures, while the open-air Buddha in Cave 20 is the easiest image to recognise. Cave 3 is large, and Caves 7 and 8 show details associated with both Chinese and Western carving styles. Visitors interested in history or Buddhist art can choose according to their interests.
Who this suits
Visitors interested in Northern Wei history, Buddhist art, grotto carving or documentary photography should allow time for the complete route. For a visit with children, make Caves 20, 6 and 12 the main line, then use a guide to connect the images, stories and carving methods. The open cave range can change during maintenance; the reservation page and entrance notice define what can be visited that day.
Check the day's access after entering
There is one main entrance at the Visitor Service Centre. After entering, check which caves are open, where queues are forming and where the sightseeing cars stop, then decide whether to walk first or take the car towards the western caves.

Build your day
The regular linear route
Follow the normal walking route from Caves 1–4 in the east, continue west through the caves that are open and finish around Caves 16–20 before leaving in the direction of the exit. The complete route takes about 3–4 hours. Make Caves 6, 12 and 20 the main stops, and allow time for queues at the key caves and for walking outside them.
Sightseeing car and short route
Another option is to take the sightseeing car, about CNY 15, into the deeper part of the site after entering and start around Cave 20. Walking in the reverse direction requires a connecting path that the site has opened for that purpose; car departures and the caves open that day follow the on-site arrangement. With only 1–2 hours, check whether Caves 20, 16–20 and 9–13 are open, then choose a short route based on the entrance staff's directions.
Get there
Bus and direct shuttle
Take bus 3 to the Yungang Grottoes terminal, then walk about 2–3 minutes to the Visitor Service Centre. The ride takes roughly 30–40 minutes and costs about CNY 2–3. Direct tourist shuttles also run from stops in Datong's old city and at Datong South Railway Station, with a fare of about CNY 10; return by the designated method from the scenic area.
Taxi and parking
A taxi from around the old city costs about CNY 30–40. Drivers can park in Lot 1, then walk about 7–8 minutes to the Visitor Service Centre entrance. Whether arriving by taxi or private car, use the Visitor Service Centre as the drop-off or parking target; after leaving, also count the 20–30-minute walk back from the west exit.
Returning from the exit
After leaving, you will usually still need to follow the path back to the Visitor Service Centre, which takes about 20–30 minutes. Include this walk when arranging a bus, shuttle or pickup.
Know before you go
Closed caves and queues
Caves 5, 16 and 18, as well as the Yungang Grottoes Museum, may close temporarily for maintenance. The reservation page and the notice at the entrance determine the open range. In the high season, the queue for Cave 6 can exceed 1 hour; arriving around the 07:30 opening or after 16:00 may mean lighter crowds.
Guides, photography and walking
For a first visit, hire a guide or rent an audio guide and use the key caves to understand the relationships between the sculptures and mural details. Photography, flash use and equipment restrictions inside the caves follow the on-site signs. Do not touch the sculptures, lean your body over railings or stop in narrow passages for a photo. Wear comfortable shoes and follow the one-way route.
