How to Visit
1

Reserve with the same identity document you will use at entry

Visitors holding foreign passports, Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan travel documents should book through Ticket Booking in the Mogao Caves Visit Reservation WeChat service account; the booking name must match the entry document.

Tip:Do not use an unauthorised third-party booking service; mismatched booking and identity details can prevent entry.
2

Choose either the regular visit or the emergency visit according to your itinerary

A regular visit includes a digital film in Exhibition Hall 1 and eight physical caves; when the emergency visit mode is activated in peak season, it includes four physical caves.

Tip:Do not build the day around one particular cave, as the actual cave route is arranged on site.
3

Go to the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center to begin the visit

The address is 8899 Yangguan East Road, Dunhuang. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your reserved time; ticket checks and the visit process begin here.

Tip:The cave area has no ticket office or visitor parking, so navigating directly to the caves can make you miss the check-in process.
4

Collect and keep your visit document as directed on site

Regular-visit and concession-ticket holders collect a paper Mogao Caves ticket information slip with valid ID at the staffed counter or self-service terminal; checks take place at both the Digital Exhibition Center and the cave area.

Tip:Losing the slip or keeping it separately from your ID can complicate later checks.
5

Enter the cave area with only essential belongings and follow the conservation rules

Suitcases and parcels of 20 inches or larger, pets and drones cannot enter; photography, filming, touching relics and loud talking are prohibited inside caves.

Tip:Heavy rain or severe sandstorms may suspend cave visits, so do not book inflexible onward transport immediately after the visit.
Highlights
  • The regular visit combines digital interpretation and physical caves in one route, making it a practical first introduction to Mogao.
  • Cave 96, the Nine-Storey Building, is one of the most recognisable structures in the cave area and is listed among the normally open caves.
  • Physical cave visits are shaped by conservation rules and on-site organisation, with the focus on understanding murals, painted sculpture and cave spaces.
  • Special caves are handled separately according to daily opening and capacity limits; they are not a fixed part of a regular ticket.
  • Entry, time spent inside, photography and belongings are all governed by heritage-protection rules.
Insider Tips

If you booked with a passport, keep the original passport easy to reach.

In peak season, secure the Mogao reservation time before arranging Mingsha Mountain, a performance or a private car.

Whether arriving by self-drive, taxi or bus, go to the Digital Exhibition Center first rather than directly to the caves.

Bring sun protection and drinking water, but do not carry large luggage.

For photos, use outdoor areas where photography is permitted; do not raise a phone to frame shots inside caves.
