How to Visit
1

Do not confuse Chadong with Fenghuang

Biancheng Chadong is connected with the setting behind Shen Congwen's Border Town. It is not a small sight inside Fenghuang Ancient Town.

Tip:It sits around Huayuan County, facing Hong'an in Chongqing across the river, and suits travelers interested in literature, slower town life, and border geography.
2

Half a day is enough for the core area

Chadong is small, and half a day is enough for the main route. Start on the Hunan-side old street, visit the Border Town memorial area, walk by the Qingshui River and the one step across three provinces area, then take the small ferry toward Hong'an in Chongqing.

Tip:This gives you the main literary, riverside, and border-town experience without overplanning.
3

Try the hand-pulled ferry, but keep it simple

The hand-pulled ferry is the most memorable small experience here. The ride is short, and the fun is crossing between Hunan and Chongqing by a very local method.

Tip:If high water, heavy rain, or a temporary suspension affects the ferry, do not force it; use a bridge or another boat option instead.
4

Slow down around Cuicui Island, the White Pagoda, and the riverside

If you have more time, walk around Cuicui Island, the White Pagoda, and the riverside path. This is not a place to rush through a checklist.

Tip:Its value is the river, old street, stilted houses, and everyday border-town rhythm.
5

Park outside the core area if self-driving

On holidays, do not try to drive into the narrow roads and core area. It is usually easier to park in an outer lot and walk in.

Tip:This saves more time than searching for a space inside the old town.
Highlights
  • Chadong's value comes from its Border Town literary background and one step across three provinces location.
  • The hand-pulled ferry is the simplest and most memorable experience.
  • Hunan's Chadong and Chongqing's Hong'an face each other across the river, so you can see both sides in a short visit.
  • The old street, Qingshui River, Cuicui Island, and White Pagoda are best enjoyed slowly.
  • Compared with Fenghuang Ancient Town, Chadong is quieter and less commercially intense.
Insider Tips

Do not expect Fenghuang-style night lights or dense commercial streets; Chadong is better for slow wandering.

Ferry price and operation can depend on the day's arrangement, water level, and weather, so confirm the fare and safety rules before boarding.

On holidays, self-drivers should use outer parking areas first instead of wasting time in narrow streets.

To understand the place better, read or at least know the basic background of Border Town and Shen Congwen before visiting.

If you need to return to Fenghuang or Jishou the same day, confirm your last bus, hired car, or return timing in advance.
