Scope and entrances

Yunshuiyao Scenic Area is in Meilin Town, Nanjing County, Zhangzhou, Fujian. The two commonly used entrances are the south gate, near Hegui Building, and the north gate, near Huaiyuan Building. This is not a single-building stop: the visit combines the Yunshuiyao old town, a riverside path, Hegui Building, and Huaiyuan Building.

The full visit usually takes 2–4 hours. If you want to walk slowly, rest under the banyan trees, or take photographs, allow about half a day. The area is open all day, but 8:00–17:30 is the more practical window for the main visit. If you stay inside the area, you can take a separate walk in the early morning or evening, but do not treat night activities as fixed attractions.

Ticket and practical fit

The common adult ticket is CNY 90 and covers the Yunshuiyao old town, Hegui Building, and Huaiyuan Building. Children under 6 and visitors aged 65 or older can enter free with identity documents; check the ticket type and eligibility conditions when booking.

This route suits first-time visitors to Fujian Tulou, travellers who enjoy unhurried walking, photography of streams and old buildings, and families who want a relaxed visit. Much of the path uses uneven cobbles, so suitcases and strollers are inconvenient. Slow down if you are travelling with older adults or young children.

Choose your visit

Hegui Building, Huaiyuan Building, and the old path

Hegui Building is a square tulou built on marshy ground. Huaiyuan Building is a double-ring round tulou known for its timber details, carved decoration, and couplets. Seeing both on one route gives you a useful comparison between square and round layouts.

The two buildings are connected by a riverside path that passes Lovers' Bridge, the waterwheel square, and old banyan trees. The full path is about 5 km. It is worth treating the walk, village views, and buildings as one connected experience rather than taking a quick photograph at the entrance and leaving.

Who this suits

The area is a good fit for visitors interested in photography, traditional architecture, period-style clothing, and village walks. It also works well for families who can spare half a day and want breaks for tea or rest. If someone in your group cannot walk far, complete only the south-gate section, the main riverside stops, and part of the Huaiyuan Building area before leaving from the more convenient side.

After 16:00, the light is often softer and the crowds may be lighter, which can make the waterwheel, banyan trees, and buildings easier to photograph. This is only a timing suggestion, not a guarantee of low crowds or ideal light.

Build your day

About 2 hours: south gate in, north gate out

For a tight schedule or a visit with older adults, enter through the south gate, see Hegui Building first, then follow the riverside path past Lovers' Bridge, the waterwheel, and the old banyan trees before reaching the Huaiyuan Building area and finishing toward the north gate. This one-way direction is easier to follow and avoids repeated walking on cobbles.

Before starting, confirm where your transfer or car will meet you. The south and north gates are not the same drop-off point. If you need to return to the original parking area, arrange a transfer in advance or include the return walk in your timing.

About 3–4 hours: the complete visit

First-time visitors can start at Hegui Building, walk slowly along the old path, pass the waterwheel square and the banyan trees, and continue to Huaiyuan Building before resting by the stream. Do not rush to fit in every point: the areas inside the tulou and the spaces used by residents depend on on-site management.

If you also plan to visit the Tianluokeng area, treat it as a separate driving or chartered-car leg. Different Nanjing scenic areas are not one compact walking district. Calculate the mountain roads, parking, and return time separately, and avoid driving the mountain roads at night.

Early morning or evening if you stay nearby

If you stay at a guesthouse inside the area, use the early morning for the riverside path and building exteriors, and the evening for the waterwheel, banyan trees, and village lanes. Whether the riverside lights or a boat performance is scheduled, and when it starts, depends on the day. These activities should not replace the main daytime visit or be described as guaranteed ticket inclusions.

Get there

High-speed rail, shared cars, and buses

From Nanjing Station, a shared car or taxi to the area commonly costs about CNY 40–45 per person and takes around 40 minutes. Buses run less frequently and may take close to 2 hours. Return transport also needs extra time; finding a car on the way in does not guarantee an equally convenient return.

After arrival, choose the drop-off point near the south or north gate according to your route. If you plan to walk from the south gate to the north gate, confirm where your luggage and vehicle will be collected before starting, so you do not carry luggage along the entire old path.

Driving and parking

Drivers can navigate to “Yunshuiyao Scenic Area Visitor Center” or “Hegui Building Parking Lot.” Parking commonly costs CNY 10–30 per day. The parking areas near the south gate, north gate, and the two buildings are not interchangeable, so enter the specific entrance or parking-lot name in the navigation app.

Weekends and holidays may bring concentrated traffic. Confirm the return-car location first, then choose which side to start from. Do not use unofficial roadside parking areas where people solicit drivers.

Know before you go

Resident life and upper-floor access

The tulou are still living homes. A paid ticket does not grant access to private rooms, upstairs corridors, or residents' living areas. Some floors may be closed to visitors. If residents temporarily allow upstairs access, offer explanations, or charge a photography fee, that is a situation-specific arrangement, not a fixed route or ticket benefit.

Commercial activity is common along the route, and people may solicit customers for food, tea, or other purchases. If you want to buy something, ask for the price and service details first. If you do not, refuse directly rather than changing your planned route because someone offers “free guiding” or “free upstairs access.”

Paths, weather, and supplies

Most of the old path uses cobbles and may be slippery after rain. Wear flat, non-slip shoes. Suitcases, strollers, and large bags make steps and stone paths much harder, so decide in advance whether the full route suits children.

Food and drinks along the path are limited. Carry water and a small amount of simple food. Strong sun, rain, and mountain roads can affect the visit; during heavy rain, shorten the riverside walk and prioritise a safe return.
