How to Visit
1

Use the lakefront if you only want photos

If you only want photos, the lakefront exterior is free, and evening is the best time to visit. Once lit, the Sun and Moon Pagodas reflect in Shan Lake.

Tip:This is one of Guilin's easiest night-view shots.
2

Check tower entry before buying

Tower entry requires a separate ticket, commonly around CNY 35-45 for adults. The pagodas have recently gone through upgrades, so check whether tower entry is open on the day you visit before buying.

Tip:If your main goal is photography, you may not need to enter.
3

Stand farther back for full reflections

For free photos, look for angles around Zhiyintai Pier, the Shan Lake path, and the Nine-Turn Bridge area.

Tip:Standing farther back usually works better than staying right under the towers.
4

Arrive around dusk

The period from dusk to shortly after the lights come on is the most comfortable. The sky still has color, and the tower lights and lake reflections are clearer.

Tip:Blue hour is easier to photograph than full darkness, especially on a phone.
5

Combine it with other night stops

Combine the pagodas with Elephant Hill, Two Rivers and Four Lakes, and Zhengyang Pedestrian Street on the same evening.

Tip:You usually only need 30-60 minutes for lakefront photos and a short walk.
Highlights
  • The Sun and Moon Pagodas are one of central Guilin's signature night views, with the gold Sun Pagoda and silver Moon Pagoda easy to recognize.
  • The Shan Lake reflection is the main draw and is more atmospheric than seeing the buildings in daytime.
  • The free lakefront angles are already strong, so you can get the classic experience without entering the towers.
  • The location is very central and easy to combine with Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Elephant Hill's exterior, and dinner near the pedestrian streets.
  • Tower entry suits travelers interested in the interior, the underwater passage, or a higher viewpoint.
Insider Tips

If your main goal is photography, you do not need to buy a tower ticket; the lakefront gives better full-pagoda compositions.

Blue hour is easier to photograph than full darkness, especially on a phone.

The lakefront is crowded at night, so avoid blocking paths with a tripod or long shooting setup.

After rain, reflections can look cleaner, but the stone paths may be slippery.

Do not buy unclear street-seller tickets or overpriced photography packages; use normal ticket channels if you decide to enter.
