Location and focus

The Former Residence of Zhang Jingjiang is on East Street near Hongji Bridge in the northern part of Nanxun Ancient Town. The visit covers the hall layout of Zunde Hall, brick and wood carving, and historical displays related to Zhang Jingjiang. It suits visitors interested in modern Chinese history, historic residences and local commercial history.

The main visit usually takes 40 minutes to 1 hour. Leave extra time for the displays and a walk along East Street. The residence has its own ticketing, ticket-checking and indoor opening arrangements, separate from the public streets and other residences.

Tickets and opening hours

The residence can be visited with a separate ticket and may also be included in Nanxun's core historic-site combination ticket, depending on the day's arrangements. For planning, allow roughly 8:30–17:00 during the day. Night-time extensions, the galleries that remain open and the last admission time may differ, so daytime hours cannot be used to plan a night visit.

If the historical displays are your main reason for coming, enter during the day if possible. After entering, confirm the gallery order and exit direction before deciding whether to place East Street or Baijianlou later in the day.

Zunde Hall and residence details

Zunde Hall is best understood through the relationship between its entrance hall, main hall and courtyards. Brick carving, wood carving, doors, windows and hall inscriptions are the main architectural details. Take time to look at the craftsmanship and proportions rather than taking only an exterior photograph at the entrance.

The interior is compact, and entry may be staggered during holidays. Visitors interested in architecture can take a slower indoor walk. If your companions do not want to stay indoors for long, focus on the main hall and public displays, then return to East Street for a break.

Historical displays

The rear building or related galleries introduce Zhang Jingjiang's life and modern history, with possible photographs, letters and personal materials. The exact displays and open areas may change, so follow the spaces open that day.

This is a good addition for visitors who want a modern-history stop alongside Nanxun's water-town scenery. If you mainly want riverside views and bridges, the indoor residence is optional; combine it with Hongji Bridge and East Street as a separate public walking route.

Who this suits

Visitors interested in modern history or architecture, and families travelling with older adults, will generally get the most from this stop. The visit involves quiet indoor walking and attention to boundaries. Visitors looking for lively entertainment or who do not want an indoor museum stop can keep the visit short.

Build your day

About 40 minutes: the residence route

Enter through the main gate, start with the entrance hall and main hall of Zunde Hall, then follow the open route to the historical displays before returning to East Street. If the route to Hongji Bridge is open that day, the bridge and river view can be a short stop after leaving; the bridge and residence remain separate public spaces.

This route suits visitors with limited time. If there is a queue, walk along East Street or near Hongji Bridge first and return to the entrance, provided the day's ticket and re-entry rules allow it.

About 1 hour: residence and northern-district walk

After moving from the southern attractions to East Street, visit the residence first, then walk along East Street and the water before continuing to Baijianlou or returning to the East Gate, depending on your energy. This combines indoor history with the northern public streets and avoids a separate return trip from the south.

If you plan to continue to Baijianlou, confirm your exit gate and remaining walking time first. Baijianlou is a residential area; use the public roads to observe the riverfront and do not extend the route into private homes or narrow private passages.

Evening and night options

If the residence has evening opening that day, it can be a backup stop for the late afternoon, but the galleries and hours may be reduced. For the full historical display, visit during the day. For the night scenery, leave the public riverbanks and Baijianlou until later.

Do not pack a night visit to the residence, an evening boat and cross-district walking into one tight schedule. Nanxun's activities have separate ticket checks, and any delay can affect the next part of the return journey.

Get there

Reaching East Street

From Huzhou Nanxun Station, take a taxi to the East or South Gate, then walk to the residence on East Street; the ride takes about 10–15 minutes. From the Xiaolianzhuang area in the south, the walk takes about 15 minutes, depending on crowds, bridges and stops.

When driving, use an official parking area near the South or East Gate and enter on foot. The residence is on a public pedestrian street, so do not drive to the doorway looking for an unofficial parking spot.

Moving through the ancient town

You can walk from the southern district to the north, or use a water bus or another water activity if there is a suitable departure that day. Water routes have their own docks and operating arrangements, separate from the residence ticket. Confirm where you will get off before treating the boat as your cross-district transfer.

Know before you go

Indoor space and admission pace

The residence is compact, and entry may be staggered during holidays. If there is a queue, leave room for waiting; a 40-minute route should not be planned as a continuous rush.

Some floors or galleries may have their own opening times. If you want the full historical display, visit the areas still open during the day. If the evening arrangement changes, follow the on-site route out and do not enter closed rooms.

Tickets and visit boundaries

The residence's separate ticket, combination ticket, evening arrangement and other residences are managed independently. When buying a Nanxun combination ticket, confirm that it includes the Former Residence of Zhang Jingjiang and that admission is still available that day.

The public streets are open for walking, but that does not include the indoor galleries of the residence. Boats, parking, food and evening activities are also separate; the residence ticket does not define what is available for those activities.

Walking and weather

East Street, the bridges and the lanes leading to the residence mainly have stone surfaces, so shoes with good grip are useful. Bridges and the entrance can be slippery after rain; with older adults or children, do not stop for photographs in narrow passages.

Nanxun's riverbanks are good for a slow walk, but Hongji Bridge and other waterside points need to remain clear for pedestrians. Take photographs from public areas, and do not climb railings or approach the edge of the water.
