Plan at a glance

Actual location and relationship to Moganshan

“Moganshan Tianchi” refers to the Jiangnan Tianchi alpine lake area in Tianhuangping Town, Anji County. It belongs to a separate visitor system from Moganshan Scenic Area. Coming from Yucun in Deqing or the Moganshan summit requires a new road and driving plan.

Allow about 2–4 hours. A deeper self-drive visit can add the mountain road and outer viewpoints. The visitor centre, lakeside area, Tianhuangping viewpoint, observatory and dam viewpoints may have different open boundaries, so confirm which locations are accessible that day before entering.

Tickets and mountain roads

Jiangnan Tianchi Scenic Area has its own ticket and visitor centre. For planning, allow roughly 8:00–17:00, with ticket checks and activities subject to change. The mountain road has many bends and clear changes in gradient, so allow time for the final section according to the road and weather.

Lake shuttle vehicles, grass skiing, skiing, stargazing, the observatory, parking and seasonal facilities may be arranged separately. A roadside viewpoint or parking place does not count as admission; enter according to that day's ticket and open-area rules.

Choose your visit

Alpine lake and lakeside area

Tianchi suits visitors who enjoy mountain roads, alpine water and a short self-drive stop. Jiangnan Tianchi is a highland reservoir lake, with the water, dam, forest and distant views forming the main content. Water level, light and visibility change the appearance.

The lakeside path or mobility service may have a changing range. If you want to walk slowly, confirm the open section and expected return time first. Mountain roads, elevation and the lakeside slope all add difficulty, so allow time for a mountain stop.

Who this suits

Self-drive travellers, visitors who enjoy mountain roads and high viewpoints, and people willing to spend half a day on mountain scenery in Anji are a good fit. Visitors prone to motion sickness, lacking mountain-driving experience or uncomfortable with bends can hire a car or let an experienced mountain driver take the wheel.

Families can choose the lakeside and lower-intensity activities according to the weather, but road conditions, wind and temperature differences need to be considered. Visitors seeking a natural lake or a flat city-park experience should understand first that Tianchi is an artificial reservoir.

Build your day

About 1–2 hours: outer viewpoint and visitor centre

After following the mountain road to Tianhuangping, park only at a safe, official viewpoint to observe the scenery. Then continue to the Jiangnan Tianchi visitor-centre area and decide whether to enter based on that day's ticket and open areas. The outer view and the attraction interior are separate experiences; do not obstruct traffic when parking or taking photographs.

For a short stop, confirm the return direction and mountain-road weather first. Sections with bends, blind spots and many cyclists are not suitable for temporary parking or turning around.

About 3–4 hours: lake and high viewpoints

After entering, choose the lakeside walk or mobility service according to the day's arrangements, then continue to the observatory, dam or another viewpoint. Ask about boarding and return arrangements before using a lakeside vehicle, including its fee and possible stops.

High points depend on weather and visibility, so reduce climbing and waiting in heavy fog. After leaving, descend along the original or another clearly marked road rather than adding an unfamiliar mountain branch.

Half-day self-drive combination

Drivers familiar with mountain roads can place Yucun, the Moganshan outskirts or another Anji attraction before or after Tianchi. These places have separate roads, parking and tickets. Confirm the Tianchi road conditions and closing time first, then decide whether to add another stop on the way.

In unfamiliar mountain roads or rain and fog, fewer linked stops are safer. Do not speed on the road or look for a closed parking spot simply to imitate a film route.

Get there

Driving to Tianhuangping

Driving is the most direct way to reach Tianchi. Navigate to the Jiangnan Tianchi visitor centre; the final roughly 18 kilometres are on a winding mountain road. Slow down, keep a safe distance and yield early to cyclists and oncoming vehicles.

From Anji Station, you can take a taxi or hire a car. Public transport is less direct than driving, and the return vehicle should be arranged in advance; last-minute cars may be difficult to find at the summit.

Parking and movement on the mountain

When entering, use the visitor-centre parking arrangement. For outer viewpoints, choose a place where parking is clearly allowed. Do not park on bends, at blind spots, on the road edge or in fire lanes, and do not enter private property just to park for free.

Walking inside, lakeside vehicles and seasonal activities each have their own range. After getting off, confirm the return vehicle and meeting point. When wind and sunlight are strong at the summit, stay within the open boundary.

Know before you go

Mountain-road driving

The winding road has many bends and gradients, while rain, fog, night driving and holiday traffic further reduce driving comfort. Do not overtake on a bend, stop temporarily, reverse or cross the road for a photograph.

People prone to motion sickness should bring medicine and water, and companions should avoid getting in and out repeatedly on consecutive bends. Slow down or pause when visibility drops; do not keep climbing just to reach better afternoon light.

Tickets and outer viewpoints

The Jiangnan Tianchi ticket, parking, lakeside transport and seasonal facilities are separate arrangements. Seeing the lake or mountain outside the attraction does not grant entry; confirm the open areas and available activities when buying.

Water level, light, the ski field, grass areas, stargazing and the observatory may change. Treat the alpine lake and mountain road as the stable experience, and decide on particular activities according to whether they operate that day.

Weather and the return

Wind, temperature and visibility at the summit differ from the foothills. Bring a jacket, sun protection and water. Follow the railings around the lake, dam and viewpoints; do not enter dangerous edges or run near the water.

Before leaving, confirm the vehicle, fuel and descent route, and aim to pass the sections with many bends before dark. A short distance on the phone map does not mean that the mountain road is easy to drive.
