Plan at a glance
Wetland scope and entrance
Xiazhu Lake National Wetland Park is in Xiazhu Lake Subdistrict, Deqing County, Huzhou. Visitors generally enter through the visitor centre and use boats to travel between the islands. Water transport links the islands, and island walks need to follow the day's boat schedule.
For planning, allow about 8:30–16:30 from March to November and 9:00–16:00 in the low season. Ticket sales may stop before closing. Adult admission, return boats, rowing boats and island activities may have different ticket scopes, so confirm whether the day's return boat is included.
Time and return limits
A quick route takes about 2 hours, while a complete visit usually takes 3–4 hours. The last admission time directly affects whether you can catch the return boat. Departures, stop order and open arrangements for Le Island, Bird Island, Jianjia Island and other waters may change, so follow the day's boats and on-site arrangement.
The wetland edge includes water, reeds and wooden paths. Mosquitoes, sun, wind, rain and boat capacity all affect the experience. Visitors who want to watch birds or walk slowly should leave room for boat waits and island walking.

Reed waterways and island scenery
Xiazhu Lake suits visitors who enjoy wetlands, reeds, water views and nature photography. Le Island focuses more on flowers, family facilities and easy walks; Bird Island focuses on birdwatching and education; Jianjia Island's reed waterways depend more heavily on the boat route.
Rowboats can enter narrower reed waterways, while electric boats may use open water. Boat type and route follow that day's operation, so ask which boat serves your target water area before buying.
Birdwatching and seasonal scenery
Birds, flower fields, reeds and light on the water change with season, weather and animal activity. Whether you see crested ibis or other birds, how close they come and whether a birdwatching platform is open cannot be guaranteed. Keep quiet and a safe distance when using a telephoto lens.
The wetland works best for slow observation. There is no need to wait on an island for one bird or flower scene; continue along the open boardwalk and water route when conditions change.
Who this suits
Families, nature photographers, birdwatchers and visitors who like slowing down on a boat are a good fit. The islands require boat transfers, and sections such as Le Island to Bird Island may also require walking. With a stroller or older adults, confirm boarding and island surfaces in advance.
Visitors sensitive to sun or mosquitoes, or unwilling to wait for the return boat, should choose a shorter route and bring shade, insect repellent and water. The wetland is not suited to a brief entrance stop followed by an expectation of seeing every island.
Build your day
About 2 hours: main-island short route
Take a boat from the visitor centre to the main open islands, walk briefly on Le Island or another near-shore area, then follow the boat schedule to Bird Island or the reed waterways before taking the return boat to the visitor centre. Confirm the last return time and stop order before boarding.
With limited time or young children, fewer islands are easier to control. Do not miss the last return boat while trying to see every area.
About 3–4 hours: deeper wetland route
On a first visit, walk the boardwalks and family areas on Le Island, continue to Bird Island for birdwatching and educational content, then enter Jianjia Island or another reed waterway with the boat type available that day. Include island walks, waiting, boarding and disembarking in the timing.
Rowboats and narrow-waterway trips may be affected by water levels, weather, boats and capacity. If the target boat pauses, use an open-water boat and public island paths; the visit can still be completed.
Linking with Xinshi Ancient Town
For a day around Deqing, visit Xiazhu Lake in the morning and Xinshi Ancient Town or another Deqing stop in the afternoon, calculating the drive and return separately. Do not delay the wetland's last return boat; the afternoon connection depends on leaving the wetland safely.
Get there
Deqing Station and driving
From Deqing Station, a taxi to the Xiazhu Lake visitor centre takes about 10–15 minutes. You can also use a bus route serving the park if it is running that day. For driving, navigate to the visitor centre or an official parking area rather than entering from a remote lane or unofficial entrance.
After parking, walk to the visitor centre to buy tickets and wait for the boat. Spaces near the visitor centre may be tight on holidays, so arriving early leaves time for ticketing, waiting and entry.
Moving inside the park
The islands depend on boats. Walking and boat sections between Le Island, Bird Island and Jianjia Island follow the day's route. Boats stop only at designated docks, and walking continues after disembarkation; confirm whether a stroller or luggage is practical before setting out.
Know before you go
Boat tickets and the last return
Wetland admission, return boats, rowing boats, island trains and other activities may be charged separately. When buying, confirm the return-boat scope, whether you can use the target boat type and the final return arrangement.
The last admission time must include the boat schedule and island visit time. Remember the return dock after entering, and do not leave the main route to look for an unmarked waterway.
Water, reeds and weather
Mosquitoes are common in wetlands, and reed edges can scratch legs. Bring insect repellent, long trousers, water and sun protection. Wooden paths, boat edges and waterside areas may be slippery, and an adult should accompany children when boarding.
Do not cross railings, stand at the edge of a boat or enter reeds and deep water. In strong wind, heavy rain, lightning or changing water levels, stop or adjust the boat ride according to the park's arrangement.
Birdwatching and island supplies
Birds and flowers change with season and weather, so no particular birdwatching result can be promised. Keep quiet, do not feed or chase birds, and do not leave the birdwatching platform or open paths for a closer photograph.
Food and convenience options on the islands are limited. Bring water and a simple snack for a longer route. If you continue to Xinshi Ancient Town or another attraction after leaving, confirm the vehicle and road direction first.
