How to Visit
1

Enter through the East Gate

Make the fortress your first stop in the morning or near sunset, and take in its overall outline from outside before entering.

Tip:Both the light and temperature are easier to manage at these times.
2

Follow a one-way route through the fortress

Walk from the East Gate through Wenchang Pavilion and Guandi Temple to the Guerrilla General's Residence, then continue to the gate towers and walls.

Tip:This order reduces backtracking and saves energy.
3

Spend time on the walls

Look towards the Gobi and the Qilian Mountains from above the fortress.

Tip:The relationship between the gate towers, barbicans, and wing walls is easier to understand from this height.
4

Use the fortress as the central stop

If visiting the Overhanging Great Wall and the First Beacon Tower on the same day, give the fortress enough time rather than rushing through all three sites for photos.

Tip:Its layered defensive layout needs more than a quick walk-through.
5

Plan around the peak-season entry cutoff

In peak season, enter before 19:30.

Tip:Late afternoon is especially good for framing the gate towers, walls, and Gobi in one view.
Highlights
  • Jiayuguan Tower, Guanghua Tower, and Rouyuan Tower form the fortress's main architectural axis.
  • The inner city, outer city, barbicans, and walls show how the fortification was designed in layers.
  • The Guerrilla General's Residence adds the administrative side of military life to a visit that might otherwise focus only on walls.
  • From the walls, you can see the fortress, Gobi, and distant mountains together, making its location immediately clear.
  • The 'last brick' behind the rear eaves of the West Barbican gate tower is an easy detail to miss.
Insider Tips

The fortress involves more walking than it appears to from outside; allow 2-3 hours.

The walls are exposed and windy, so bring a light windproof layer even in summer.

Wear shoes with grip that are suitable for steps; sandals and hard-soled dress shoes are poor choices here.

Go early or late to avoid tour groups and the strongest midday sun.

If you also plan to climb the Overhanging Great Wall, do not spend too long in every exhibition area inside the fortress; save energy for later.
