Museum and archaeological park
Dawenkou Site Museum is south of Weijiazhuang Village in Dawenkou Town, Daiyue District, Tai'an. Its entrance is inside Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park. The museum itself takes about one hour; combining it with the archaeological park, the Ming-era Stone Bridge, and Shanxi Guild Hall usually takes 2–3 hours.
Admission is free, but you need an identity document to scan for entry. Advance reservation is not required. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–11:30 and 14:00–17:00; in winter, the afternoon session ends at 16:00. It is closed on Mondays, except when holiday arrangements apply.
Plan around the midday closure
The museum closes for lunch from 11:30 to 14:00, with separate morning and afternoon sessions. If you are driving or taking a bus, place the museum in the morning or after 14:00, then decide whether to continue to the archaeological park and the Wen River area.

Exhibitions and main sights
The "Dawn of Haidai" exhibition introduces Dawenkou culture through objects, reconstructed scenes, and interactive content. The octagonal-star painted pottery dou is a key exhibit. A red pottery animal-shaped vessel and an openwork ivory comb help explain pottery, craft, and early settlement life.
Outside the museum, Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park displays reconstructed houses, pottery kilns, and burials. This extends the indoor exhibition into an outdoor archaeological setting. The museum and the park serve different purposes, so visit the exhibition first and then decide whether to continue on foot.
Set your expectations for the objects
Some important exhibits are replicas, while some originals are held by the National Museum of China or Shandong Museum. The octagonal-star pottery dou, the exhibition theme, and the archaeological park together form the main visit. For a long trip, plan around the archaeology and cultural context rather than a single original "national treasure".
The museum suits history and archaeology enthusiasts, and families who want a half-day museum-and-park visit. Visitor numbers are usually lower than at Mount Tai, so travellers who prefer a quiet walk can add the Ming Stone Bridge and a section of the Wen River.

The 2–3-hour extended route
Enter through the west gate of the archaeological park and visit the museum first to understand the Dawenkou culture and the site. Then walk through the reconstructed houses, burials, and pottery kilns. Leave towards the east gate and follow the river for about 1 km to the Ming-era Stone Bridge and Shanxi Guild Hall.
This route connects the indoor exhibition, archaeological park, and historic bridge, but the park is large and the riverside walk is long. Wear comfortable shoes and allocate the afternoon closure and return transport separately. Do not start the museum visit just before closing.
The one-hour museum route
When time is limited, go straight to the museum. Start with the "Dawn of Haidai" exhibition, then focus on the octagonal-star pottery dou and the main pottery displays. Keep the exhibition time for the short visit; the archaeological park and Stone Bridge can be visited separately.
If you choose the short route, make sure the museum is open that day. The midday closure from 11:30 to 14:00 and the Monday closure are the main time restrictions to watch.
Get there
Driving and buses
Drivers can navigate to the Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park parking lot, which is free and usually has plenty of space. From Tai'an city, buses 505 and 209 go to the archaeological park. Bus 207 goes to Shanxi Jiecun Stop, followed by a walk of about 500 metres to the area near the Stone Bridge.
Dawenkou Site Museum is in Dawenkou Town, separate from Mount Tai, Dai Temple, and the attractions in central Tai'an. If you are not driving, confirm the return bus schedule in advance; finding a vehicle after reaching the Stone Bridge may take time.
Moving through the park
The museum entrance is inside the archaeological park, so enter the park before reaching the museum check-in point. The museum is about 1 km from the Stone Bridge. The park also contains reconstructed houses, pottery kilns, and burial displays, so the museum works best as the first stop.

Free admission and identity documents
The museum is free, but entry requires an identity-document scan and an on-site document check. Overseas visitors should confirm which document can be used and how entry is handled before setting out; whether a document can be scanned directly follows the on-site rule.
The museum is closed on Mondays and from 11:30 to 14:00 each day. In winter, the afternoon session ends at 16:00. Holiday crowds may increase, so arriving near the start of either session makes it easier to combine the museum and the archaeological park.
Walking, weather, and food
The archaeological park is large, and the riverside walk from the museum to the Stone Bridge is about 1 km. Spring flower fields, autumn reeds, and the Stone Bridge suit outdoor photography, but sun, cooler weather, and wet paths after rain affect walking comfort. Shoes with good grip are more practical.
For food, consider Dawenkou Town or return to Tai'an for local dishes such as Taishan chicken and Taishan Sanmei soup. Food choices around the museum and park are limited, so coordinate the return with the afternoon closing time and the bus schedule.
