Manbalaseng Temple on Tuhai Mountain

Manbalaseng Temple (满巴拉僧庙) is a Tibetan Buddhist temple on Tuhai Mountain in Lasengmiao Town, Hainan District, Wuhai. It is also known locally by the shorter name Lasengmiao (拉僧庙). The red walls, stupas, prayer flags and prayer-wheel corridor are the main features of a visit on the mountain. This is a religious site; follow on-site etiquette and access guidance.

Manbalaseng Temple has a historical connection to Mongolian medicine. Another related cultural attraction is the Manbalaseng Mongolian Medicine Museum (满巴拉僧蒙医药博物馆). Its exact location, public access and opening hours should be confirmed before planning a visit.

Hall and outer grounds access arrangements

The outer grounds are currently listed as open all day with free admission. The temple halls and museum have separate arrangements; check their access before planning an interior visit.

Choose your visit

Short visit to the outer grounds | About 1–1.5 hours

From the parking area at the foot of the mountain, walk uphill for about 15 minutes. The uphill route includes roughly 300 stair steps. See the white stupa, prayer flags, prayer-wheel corridor and exterior of the main hall, then return the same way. This short visit does not enter the halls or museum and suits visitors with limited time who want to see the architecture and mountain scenery.

Enter the halls and see the Mongolian medicine exhibits | About 2–2.5 hours

If the main hall is open, visit the outer grounds first, then ask whether the Manbalaseng Mongolian Medicine Museum (满巴拉僧蒙医药博物馆) is open and how to enter. If the museum is open to visitors that day, you can also learn about the historical link between the temple and local Mongolian medicine.

The access route, barriers and safety limits for the rear caves and cliffside viewpoint have not been confirmed, so they are not part of the suggested routes. When photographing the mountain or distant industrial scenery, use only viewpoints where stopping is permitted; do not enter industrial sites or cross barriers.

Build your day

Morning visit to the main hall

If the main hall is open for a morning visit, walk uphill from the foot of the mountain past the white stupa and prayer flags, continue through the prayer-wheel corridor to the main hall, then return by the same route. The outer-grounds route takes about 1–1.5 hours, excluding time inside the hall.

An afternoon visit inside or outside

Afternoon side light can suit photos of the red walls, stupas and rooftops; the light changes with the season and weather. After visiting the halls, take photos in areas of the outer grounds that are open, then walk back down the uphill route.

Get there

Navigate to Tuhai Mountain

In your map app, search for Tuhai Mountain Tourist Area (图海山旅游区) or Manbalaseng Temple (满巴拉僧庙). The full address is Tuhai Mountain Tourist Area (图海山旅游区), Lasengmiao Town, Hainan District, Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, China. Use the full place name so your navigation does not stop in the town instead of taking you to the temple entrance on the mountain.

Driving and return transport

The drive from central Wuhai takes about 40 minutes, and parking is available at the foot of the mountain. Travel time and parking arrangements depend on your starting point, road conditions and on-site directions. The uphill walk takes about 15 minutes and includes steps; bring water and wear shoes suitable for slopes.

If taking a bus, check live routes, transfers and the last service before setting out. If you are not driving, arrange both the outbound and return trips in advance. For a taxi or ride-hailing car, agree on a pick-up time with the driver.

Know before you go

Opening arrangements for the halls and outer grounds

The temple halls and outer grounds have different visitor arrangements. If you hope to enter the main hall, call 0473-2796070 before going up Tuhai Mountain to confirm the day’s hours and access. If you only want to see the red walls, stupas and exterior buildings, follow the arrangements for the outer grounds.

Admission is currently listed as free. If a special event or management arrangement changes access, follow the on-site notice. Check before departure that the ticket enquiry number is still in service.

Mountain paths, weather and etiquette

The uphill route is windy, with limited shade and places to buy supplies. Bring water and protection from wind and sun. Use the parking area and toilets as directed; do not explore closed mountain paths, cave entrances or cliff edges.

Keep quiet inside the halls and follow on-site rules for photography, worship and visitor access. Do not touch offerings or disturb religious activities. Plan to eat after returning to Wuhai; do not count on shops or restaurants on the mountain for supplies.
