The Xi’an Ancient City Wall is one of China’s best-preserved fortifications and a must-see landmark for travelers. Here, you can cycle along the centuries-old ramparts, explore historic gates like the South Gate and Changle Gate, and enjoy stunning sunset views as the city lights up. Whether you’re walking, biking, or watching traditional performances, the wall offers the perfect mix of history, culture, and modern city life in Xi’an.

A Walk Through History

The Xi’an Ancient City Wall (西安古城墙, Xī’ān Gǔ Chéngqiáng) is one of the city’s hottest attractions — even if you don’t plan to climb up, chances are you’ll pass by it more than once.

How to Explore the Wall

Taking a full loop around the Xi’an City Wall offers sweeping views of the city from all sides. Along the way, you’ll see ancient defense structures such as the moat, drawbridges, arrow towers, and main gates.

For creative travelers, this is also a perfect filming spot — unleash your inner ancient warrior or Mulan , and you might just feel like stepping into a Chinese historical drama!

Built in 1384 during the Ming Dynasty (Hongwu Year 17) , the wall is massive. The best way to explore it is by renting a bicycle and riding slowly along the top. Even so, it takes about 1.5 hours to complete a full circle.

Interestingly, the City Wall also has a surprisingly modern twist — the area beneath the wall has become a stage for local rock bands , where you might stumble upon performances by future stars like Hei Sa (黑撒) or Xu Wei (许巍) , both famous Xi’an musicians.

The visitor facilities are excellent , and updated information about guided tours, performances, and events can be easily found on official notices around the site.

Travel Tip: Visit after 4 p.m. for cooler weather and golden-hour photos. By 6 p.m. , the entire wall lights up — the night view is absolutely stunning!

Cycling and Strolling Along the Xi’an City Wall

Cycling Along the Xi’an City Wall

Recommended Cycling Route

Start your ride from the South Gate (南门, Nánmén) and follow the path eastward to the East Gate (东门, Dōngmén) , then continue past the North Gate (北门, Běimén) and finish at the West Gate (西门, Xīmén).

You’ll enjoy the gentle breeze and warm sunlight as you ride at an easy pace, especially during a winter afternoon. Take a short break at the East Gate to admire the ancient arrow towers, gatehouses, watchtowers, and battlements — these structures once formed the city’s first line of defense.

Walking Route

After returning your bike at the West Gate , you can enjoy a leisurely walk back toward the South Gate — this stretch is known as the most scenic section of the entire wall. Along the way, you’ll pass by the parapet wall (女墙, nǚqiáng) and the battlement wall (垛墙, duǒqiáng).

From the parapet side, you can look down upon ancient Xi’an’s traditional buildings , softened by the passage of time; while from the battlements, the modern skyline of skyscrapers rises beyond the ancient ramparts — a striking contrast of old and new.
