First-Time Visitors’ Guide to Xi’an

Xi’an, the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties , attracts countless travelers with its rich history, culture, and cuisine. From the imposing City Wall(古城墙, Gǔchéng Qiáng) and bustling Muslim Quarter(回民街, Huímín Jiē) , to the world-famous Terracotta Army(兵马俑, Bīngmǎyǒng) , the lively “City That Never Sleeps ” recalling the Tang Dynasty, and Xi’an’s legendary local food—there’s no shortage of reasons to visit.

Overview of Xi’an

Terracotta Army

A Historical Treasure

Known as Chang’an(长安, Cháng’ān) in ancient times, Xi’an sits in central-western China and serves as the capital of Shaanxi Province(陕西省, Shǎnxī Shěng). Having witnessed the rise and fall of 13 dynasties , the city is like a living museum. Every brick and stone tells a story—from the Terracotta Army , one of the world’s eight wonders , to the centuries-old City Wall , and the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda(大雁塔, Dàyàn Tǎ) , once housing Buddhist scriptures from India.

Food Capital of Northwest China

Xi’an has a long history of culinary excellence. Over centuries, chefs serving emperors and nobles passed down their skills, giving birth to unique northwestern flavors. The city’s famous street snacks are irresistible:

  • Roujiamo(腊汁肉夹馍, Làzhī Ròu Jiāmó) — a savory meat sandwich
  • Liangpi(凉皮, Liángpí) — cold wheat or rice noodles
  • Yangrou Paomo(羊肉泡馍, Yángròu Pàomó) — lamb stew with bread
  • Saozi Noodles(臊子面, Sàozi Miàn) — spicy minced meat noodles

From morning till night, historic eateries and new snack stalls are packed with locals and tourists enjoying a culinary feast.

Huashan Mountain(西岳华山, Xīyuè Huàshān)

Located about 120 km east of Xi’an , Huashan is famously known as the “Most Dangerous Mountain in the World”. Its sheer cliffs and dramatic peaks have been celebrated in poetry and paintings for centuries. Once you decide to climb Huashan, there’s no turning back , hence the saying: “From ancient times, Huashan has only one path(自古华山一条路)”. A 1–2 day trip from Xi’an allows visitors to experience its breathtaking steepness and natural beauty.

Best Time to Visit Xi’an

xi an

Xi’an experiences four distinct seasons , but the best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).

Spring (March–May)

Spring in Xi’an is warm and dry , with plenty of sunny days. This season coincides with flower bloom , making it perfect for sightseeing:

  • Qinglong Temple(青龙寺, Qīnglóng Sì) and Xi’an Jiaotong University(西安交通大学, Xī’ān Jiāotōng Dàxué) are popular for cherry blossoms and peach blossoms.
  • Xingqing Park(兴庆公园, Xīngqìng Gōngyuán) and Daming Palace National Heritage Park(大明宫国家遗址公园, Dàmíng Gōng Guójiā Yízhǐ Gōngyuán) are filled with vibrant flowers and occasionally host traditional folk performances.

Autumn (September–November)

Autumn in Xi’an is cool and pleasant , with golden foliage everywhere:

  • Big and Small Wild Goose Pagodas(大、小雁塔, Dà Xiǎo Yàn Tǎ) are surrounded by colorful trees in shades of orange, yellow, and green.
  • Gu Guanyin Zen Temple(古观音禅寺, Gǔ Guānyīn Chán Sì) and Da Ci’en Temple(大慈恩寺, Dà Cí’ēn Sì) are great for viewing thousand-year-old ginkgo trees.
  • Zhonglou North & South Streets(钟楼南北大街, Zhōnglóu Nánběi Dàjiē) are lined with blooming osmanthus , filling the air with fragrance.

⚠️ Be aware of occasional autumn rains.

Summer (June–August)

Summer can be hot and sunny , sometimes reaching 40°C (104°F). When visiting open sites like the City Wall(古城墙, Gǔchéng Qiáng) , try to avoid noon hours and bring sun protection and heat-relief items.Tips:

  • Enjoy an ice-cold Bingfeng soda (local soft drink)
  • Cool down at the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda music fountain in the evening

Winter (November–March)

Winter in Xi’an is cold and windy , with temperatures occasionally dropping to -4°C (24°F). Fog is common, so dress warmly.

  • On lucky days, you may witness a snowy scene in the ancient capital.
  • Fewer tourists during this period mean lower hotel rates and ticket prices compared to peak season.

Suggested Itinerary for Xi’an

Recommended Duration: 4–5 Days

Xi’an’s city attractions are relatively concentrated, and the metro system is convenient. With 2–3 days , you can explore the ancient capital and enjoy its famous local cuisine.

For nearby suburban sites , such as the Mount Li – Huaqing Palace – Terracotta Army line(骊山-华清池-兵马俑, Lǐ Shān – Huáqīng Chí – Bīngmǎyǒng) , a one-day bus trip is enough to visit and return.

If you plan to visit more distant attractions like Huashan(华山, Huàshān) , Hukou Waterfall(壶口瀑布, Húkǒu Pùbù) , or Mount Taibai(太白山, Tàibái Shān) , consider adding 1–2 extra days.
