How to Visit
1

Enter the Tomb of Huo Qubing area through Maoling Museum

After entering Maoling Museum, follow the site signs to the Tomb of Huo Qubing and its stone-carving corridor. The Tomb of Huo Qubing is within the Maoling Museum grounds and uses the Maoling Scenic Area ticket. Tickets are CNY 75 from March to November and CNY 55 from December to the end of February.

Tip:Do not mistake the tomb for a separately ticketed attraction or spend time looking for another ticket office.
2

See the stone-carving corridor before approaching the mound

Start at the stone-carving corridors on either side of the tomb area, viewing Horse Trampling a Xiongnu Warrior and the other carvings before taking the mound steps. Allow about 30-45 minutes for the carving corridor and forecourt.

Tip:Viewing the carvings first helps prevent a rushed visit to the main works after the climb. Do not touch the carvings or enter protected areas.
3

Choose whether to climb to the viewing pavilion based on your fitness

If comfortable, take the steps beside the mound to the viewing pavilion; otherwise, complete the visit from the level paths. The ascent is light and usually takes about 5-10 minutes up and down. From the pavilion, you can look over the Wuling Plain towards the Mausoleum of Emperor Wu.

Tip:The steps do not suit everyone. Older visitors, young children, and anyone with limited mobility should be accompanied; in hot weather, prioritise water and skip the climb if needed.
4

Continue to the museum galleries or the imperial mausoleum after the tomb visit

After descending, return to the museum galleries or follow the road towards the Mausoleum of Emperor Wu. The imperial mausoleum is about 1-1.2 km away, or roughly 10-20 minutes on foot. If you are not continuing there, the tomb can be the outdoor final section of a museum visit.

Tip:Do not include the Tomb of Wei Qing as a fixed stop; it is not a standard open visitor area.
Highlights
  • The mound is modelled on the Qilian Mountains, linking the tomb setting to Huo Qubing's military career.
  • The stone-carving group in front of the tomb is the site's core feature, with Horse Trampling a Xiongnu Warrior as its best-known work.
  • Stone horses, reclining oxen, crouching tigers, and Man and Bear show how Han-dynasty carving used animals and figures to convey force and movement.
  • The viewing pavilion offers a higher view across the Wuling Plain and towards the Mausoleum of Emperor Wu, though the main stone-carving visit is complete without climbing.
Insider Tips

Treat the mound climb as optional. The level-path stone-carving visit remains the core of the route if you want to save energy.

Hours are 08:30-18:00 from April to October, with entry ending at 17:30; from November to March, hours are 08:30-17:30, with entry ending at 17:00.

The mound top, carving corridor, and route towards the imperial mausoleum are exposed, so summer visits work best earlier in the day or later in the afternoon.

You may pause quietly in front of the tomb, but do not burn candles or incense, carve into surfaces, or leave objects behind.
