Zhangjiajie Travel Guide: Tianmen Mountain, National Forest Park & Grand Canyon

14 min read

Explore Zhangjiajie’s top spots: Tianmen Mountain, National Forest Park & Grand Canyon Glass Bridge with tips on tickets, routes & transport.

The towering sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie—so otherworldly that they inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. But did you know that hundreds of millions of years ago, this area was actually covered by ocean? Today, what's left are vast quartz sandstone formations shaped by time and nature, forming the iconic stone forest landscape you see now. Because of its unique geological conditions, Zhangjiajie is also home to a rich and rare ecosystem, where countless species of flowers, trees, and plants thrive. Walking among them feels like stepping back into prehistoric times, getting close to lifeforms that have been evolving for ages.

Must-Visit Areas in Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie’s scenic spots may seem scattered and complex at first glance, but most of the highlights are concentrated in three main areas :

  • Wulingyuan (武陵源, Wǔlíngyuán) : This area includes Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Zhangjiajie UNESCO Global Geopark, Tianzi Mountain (天子山, Tiānzǐ Shān), Yuanjiajie (袁家界, Yuánjiājiè), and Yangjiajie (杨家界, Yángjiājiè).

  • Tianmen Mountain (天门山, Tiānmén Shān) : Famous for the natural rock arch Heaven 's Gate (Tianmen Cave), plus Laodaowan Canyon, Fairy Stream (仙人溪, Xiānrén Xī), and the "Back Heaven’s Gate" trail.

  • Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (张家界大峡谷, Zhāngjiājiè Dàxiágǔ) : Known mainly for the spectacular Glass Bridge, one of the highest and longest in the world.

If you have enough time, it's worth visiting all three. But if you're short on time, don’t miss Wulingyuan , especially Zhangjiajie National Forest Park , particularly the Tianzi Mountain section. When people talk about “Zhangjiajie,” they’re often referring to this massive scenic area.

Wulingyuan Scenic Area (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park)

The Wulingyuan scenic area may look overwhelming at first glance, but navigating it is actually quite straightforward. The park is divided into two parts: the mountain top and the valley floor, connected by a network of cable cars.

How to Get to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

  • By Bus : Take a shuttle from the bus station next to the railway station to either Wulingyuan Scenic Area or the National Forest Park. The ride takes about 50 minutes.

Top Attractions in Zhangjiajie Forest Park

Golden Whip Stream (Jinbianxi)

This 7.5-kilometer canyon trail takes about 3 hours to walk to Yuanjiajie. You can catch a shuttle bus midway or ride the Bailong Elevator (RMB 65 one way, RMB 33 discounted) straight up. The path is flat and paved, bordered by a babbling stream on one side and lush trees and cliffs on the other. Watch out for wild monkeys—don’t provoke them!

This naturally formed stream is crystal clear, with fish darting beneath the surface and colorful stones polished smooth by flowing water. Sunlight filters through the tree canopy, creating a dappled mirror on the stream’s surface. But be careful—mossy stones along the trail are slippery. With its rich oxygen and serene beauty, Golden Whip Stream is a must-hike spot in Zhangjiajie.

Ten-Mile Gallery (Shili Huaguang)

This 3-km canyon trail takes about 50 minutes on foot or you can ride a sightseeing train (RMB 38 one way, RMB 24 discounted). Compared to Golden Whip Stream, this area offers more expansive views of the towering peaks.

Sightseeing Train Discounts :

  • Free ride : Children under 1.2m, qualified disabled persons, journalists, and seniors over 70 with valid ID

  • Discounted fare : Students, active military personnel, direct family members of martyrs, and individuals with official low-income certificates

Tianzi Mountain

Home to top viewpoints like Shentangwan and the "Commander’s Platform" (Dianjiangtai), this area offers panoramic views of the peak forest. A visit to Helong Park takes about an hour and includes multiple observation decks. Take the Tianzi Mountain Cable Car (RMB 72 one way, RMB 36 discounted) to save time and energy.

Yuanjiajie

This cliffside trail offers sweeping views of the canyon and is home to the famous "Hallelujah Mountains" from Avatar —especially the towering "Heaven and Earth Pillar" (Qiankun Zhu). It’s one of the most popular spots in the park. In peak season, avoid walking against the crowd from east to west.

Yangjiajie

Less crowded than Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie is perfect for a more peaceful hike. The trails here can be more challenging—some sections require scrambling with both hands and feet—so plan carefully if traveling with kids or older adults. Take the Yangjiajie Cable Car (RMB 76 one way, RMB 38 discounted) if needed.

Yangjiajie boasts surreal views—towering ridges, winding peaks, and what looks like a "great wall" of jagged stone rising dramatically. It’s a visual symphony of geological beauty and truly feels like nature’s secret realm.

Huangshizhai (Yellow Stone Village)

Often overlooked, this scenic spot sits near Golden Whip Stream and offers spectacular overhead views of Yuanjiajie and Yangjiajie’s peak forests. Hike up in about 2 hours or take the Huangshizhai Cable Car (RMB 65 one way, RMB 33 discounted; round-trip RMB 118, discounted RMB 59).

Yellow Dragon Cave (Huanglong Dong)

This massive cave system includes both dry and water-filled caverns spread over four levels. The star attraction is the “Heaven-Supporting Pillar”—a slender stalagmite nearly six stories tall, once insured for RMB 100 million for its uniqueness.

Note : Tickets for Yellow Dragon Cave are not included in the Forest Park entry.

Ticket Info :

  • Regular: RMB 60 (entry) + RMB 36 (boat ride) + RMB 25 (audio guide) = RMB 121; optional insurance RMB 4

  • Discounted: RMB 30 + RMB 18 + RMB 25 = RMB 73; optional insurance RMB 4

  • Maze section (optional): Regular RMB 15; Discounted RMB 8

Tips to Avoid Getting Lost in Wulingyuan

  1. Entry Points : The main gates are Forest Park Entrance, Yangjiajie Entrance, and the core Wulingyuan Entrance (near Ten-Mile Gallery). Enter from one and exit through another to make a loop. Both Forest Park and Wulingyuan gates offer luggage storage.

  2. Layout : The area is split into upper (mountain) and lower (valley) zones. Most top viewpoints—Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie—are on the upper level. Lower trails include Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery. Cable cars and elevators connect the levels, or you can hike via stone stairways.

  3. Shuttle Buses : Free eco-buses run throughout the park. On regular days, buses operate from 8:00–19:00 (until 18:00 in winter). Just wave one down and tell the driver where you're headed. In high season, buses come every few minutes; in low season, you might wait 10–15 minutes.

Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area

Located to the south of downtown Zhangjiajie—opposite the direction of Wulingyuan—Tianmen Mountain (天门山, Tiānmén Shān) is often visited as a standalone day trip. You can even spot its iconic Tianmen Cave (天门洞, Tiānmén Dòng) from the city center. The mountain’s striking shape, featuring a massive fan-shaped hole through its middle and a surprisingly flat summit, makes it an unforgettable sight. The addition of thrilling glass skywalks has only made it more adventurous for thrill-seeking visitors.

⚠️ Important tip: Some attractions like the West Glass Walkway, East Glass Walkway, and Panlong Cliff Glass Walkway may close in winter due to weather. Be sure to check conditions before your trip.

Highlights of Tianmen Mountain

⛰️ Tianmen Cave

Known as the "Heaven’s Gate," this natural arch is reached by climbing 999 steps —an awe-inspiring ascent. Legend has it the cave formed during a rock collapse in the Three Kingdoms period. It’s Tianmen Mountain’s most iconic landmark.

🚡 Tianmen Cable Car

🌫️ Guigu Cliff Walk

This walkway hugs the cliffs near Guigu Cave and isn’t on the edge or top of the cliff—it runs through the middle of the sheer drop , making you feel like you’re one with the mountain’s ups and downs.

🏞️ Glass Skywalks

Both the West and East routes offer glass walkways suspended over dizzying drops. Not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of heights! They are not mandatory, and you can take the regular cliff path if preferred.
The glass section is 60 meters long, and you'll need to wear special shoe covers (¥5/person). Don’t worry about the street vendors selling them—you can get the official ones at the walkway entrance.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge (张家界大峡谷玻璃桥, Zhāngjiājiè Dàxiágǔ Bōli Qiáo) is a major highlight and a must-visit attraction for many travelers. Spanning over 400 meters between two mountain peaks, this bridge holds multiple world records for its engineering feats. Beyond the glass bridge, the canyon’s sightseeing spots are relatively limited, but it offers a range of thrilling activities like zip-lining and bungee jumping for adventure seekers.

Although the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge belong to the same scenic area, their tickets are sold separately, making it convenient to explore either one individually or both together.

The canyon boasts pristine natural surroundings. At its base, a flowing river is lined with various waterfalls of different sizes, creating a misty atmosphere reminiscent of an adventure movie like The Lost Tomb. There is a well-maintained walking path along the river, suitable for elderly visitors and children.

  • Self-drive: The scenic area enforces vehicle restrictions. Without a prior reservation, vehicles must park in the designated self-drive parking lot, then take the park shuttle bus to the ticket entrance.

Should You Visit Tianmen Mountain or Zhangjiajie National Forest Park First?

Your itinerary depends on your arrival time:

  • Arriving around noon? Visit Tianmen Mountain first. It’s a great way to use your remaining half-day and avoid the peak crowd times.

  • Arriving early morning or the night before? Head straight to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park from the central station and save Tianmen Mountain for your last day. Stay near the train station after the park visit. Tianmen Mountain is just a 10-minute drive from the station, so you can get an early start to beat the queues and still have time for other sights in the afternoon.

Glass Bridge at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon vs. Glass Walkway at Tianmen Mountain — Which to Choose?

Tianmen Mountain is the better choice overall. Besides the thrilling glass walkway, it offers other natural highlights like the famous Tianmen Cave and is closer to the city center with easier transportation and more developed facilities.

The Grand Canyon , a relatively new attraction, is centered around the glass bridge and outdoor adventure activities like bungee jumping and paragliding. It has fewer traditional scenic spots but is perfect for adrenaline junkies.
