Location and access
Nansan Island is in Nansan Town, Potou District, and is made up of 10 linked islets. The most reliable way in is Nansan Island Bridge, which lets you drive straight onto the island; if you are not driving, you can also cross by ferry from Nansan Pier. Entry is free all day, and there is basically no need to book ahead. What matters here is not getting through a gate, but how much time you want to leave for the coast, the fishing-village setting and shore activities.
How long to stay
If you mainly want sea views, a few windmill-coast photos and one seafood meal, 3-4 hours is enough. If you want shore activity, sunset and Jinghai Palace in one go, leave a full day. Nansan Island works best for self-drivers, families and people who want to slow down; the sights are spread out, so this is not a place you finish in one quick loop.

3 hours: an island sampler
Enter by Nansan Island Bridge, go first to Yidian Garden Beach for sand and shells, then stop at Happy Sea Coffee, and head back. It is the best choice if you have limited time and mainly want sea air without adding a lot of extra driving.
Half a day to two days
If you want a fuller version of Nansan, spend the morning at Mucun Beach for tide activity, have seafood for lunch, go to the Windmill Coast in the afternoon and finish at Jinghai Palace in the evening. If you stay overnight, the second day can be used for island cycling, a boat trip, the mangrove boardwalk and a morning market seafood run.
Build your day
Keep the route in island order
After entering the island, link the bridge, beach and cafe stops first, then keep the Windmill Coast for the afternoon and Jinghai Palace for late day. Nansan Listening to Waves, the Windmill Coast, Yidian Garden Beach and Happy Sea Coffee all work well as short stops, but the real time sinks are shore activity and island cycling.
Put the highlights into the right time slots
If you are moving from east to west, it is more natural to leave the windmills and sunset for the later part of the day. If your group has different energy levels, do not force the cycling route and the shore activity into the same half day. The island's points are spread out, so slow driving is easier than trying to chase the next stop in a hurry.
Get there
Driving and ferry choices
Self-driving is the best option. From the city center, Nansan Island Bridge takes about 40 minutes, and once you are on the island you can move freely because most places have free parking or parking for about CNY 10 a day. If you are using public transport, take bus 908 from Xiashan Station to Nansan Terminal; the ride takes about an hour, costs CNY 12, and the East Shore Memory beach area is only a few hundred meters away.
Moving around the island
Renting an e-bike is the easiest way to get around, at about CNY 50 a day, and it lets you stop wherever you want for photos. Taxis are possible, but they are not easy to hail on ordinary days, especially from more remote spots like the Windmill Coast. Plan your return before you set out; do not treat the ride home as something you can solve at the last minute.
Know before you go
Tides, gear and sun
Check the tide table before shore activity and go at low tide. On-site shore tools are expensive, with a shovel around CNY 40, so bring your own if you can; a shrimp-catching tool rental is about CNY 10. The coast is exposed and the planted areas have mosquitoes, so sunscreen, a hat and repellent are all worth packing. If you drive onto sand, only do it on hard-packed sections; wet ground can trap a normal car very easily.
Seafood, parking and pace
Seafood prices are better when you bargain at the market first, and most processing fees are around CNY 10-25 per dish. Sea-front restaurants should also be asked about price and weighing before you order. The island still feels semi-raw, with the occasional bit of litter on the beach, so bringing a trash bag and leaving extra time for the return trip will make the day feel calmer.
