Plan at a glance

What the lighthouse visit includes

Naozhou Lighthouse stands in the island's northeast, near Turtle City and Nayan rocky shore, about 15 minutes by e-bike from the pier. The practical visit is the red-and-white tower exterior, volcanic-rock base and coastal setting.

Exterior viewing is free. Interior access and tower climbing are not consistently available, so do not make entry inside the tower essential to your plan; the reference hours are 08:00–17:30 and no booking is needed.

Time to allow

Allow 20–40 minutes for the exterior and shore views, or 3–4 hours when combining it with Turtle City and Nayan rocky shore. On a first island visit, use it within the wider Songhuang Well–lighthouse–coast–Cunliang Bay circuit.

This is a focused navigation-history and photography stop, not a stand-alone resort. Preserve time for island transport, coastal walking and the ferry back.

Choose your visit

3–4 hours: lighthouse and rocky shore

From Dongnan Pier, see the lighthouse exterior, continue to Turtle City, then visit Nayan rocky shore. The three stops are concentrated in the northeast and work well when the return ferry limits the day.

After exterior photographs, move on rather than waiting at the tower entrance. Turtle City adds a controlled family stop, while Nayan provides the volcanic coast experience.

One day: add heritage and sunset

Start at Songhuang Well, then visit the lighthouse, Turtle City and Nayan rocky shore before cycling the coast to Cunliang Bay for sunset and the harbour for dinner. This makes the lighthouse a precise stop inside an island-wide day.

Keep e-bike charge, road time and the return boat in the plan. The lighthouse should not replace the island's broader movement logic.

Build your day

Photograph the tower and coast

Start from a little distance so the red-and-white tower, blue sea and black volcanic rock fit into one frame, then move closer for the base and surrounding details. Do not stand directly beneath the tower when trying to photograph it.

Afternoon light suits the exterior and stone walls. If the interior is unavailable, continue directly to Turtle City or Nayan rather than sacrificing the rest of the route.

Continue to Turtle City and Nayan

Turtle City follows naturally from the lighthouse and provides a family-oriented break before Nayan rocky shore. Use an e-bike for the short connections between the tower, turtle area and volcanic shoreline.

Continue toward Cunliang Bay only if ferry timing allows; otherwise turn back toward the pier. Sunset photographs must not consume the time needed to reach the return boat.

Get there

Reach Dongnan Pier first

Drive to Dongnan Pier Passenger Terminal, park for CNY 10 for three hours or CNY 10–20 per day, then take the CNY 16–25 passenger ferry. Leaving your car at the pier and renting locally is usually the efficient option for a lighthouse-focused day.

The car ferry costs CNY 78 per vehicle plus CNY 10 per passenger and can involve a 1–2 hour holiday queue. Use it only when an island car is essential.

Island transport

E-bikes cost CNY 15–30 per day, open three-wheelers CNY 35 per day, and a driver-operated electric cart is CNY 100 for two hours. The lighthouse, Turtle City and Nayan rocky shore are easiest to link by e-bike.

Check battery and vehicle condition before renting. Ride conservatively on roads with many junctions and few traffic lights, especially when heading to the rocky coast.

Know before you go

Interior expectations and ferry return

The lighthouse may be inside a locked maritime compound and may only be viewable from outside. Treat its exterior, volcanic rock and coast as the visit's core so the route still works without tower access.

The final island boat is usually between 17:30 and 18:00, so queue at the pier from around 15:00. Car-ferry users need even more buffer on holidays.

Coastal safety and food

Wear grippy shoes around volcanic rocks and use sun protection. Cunliang Bay and Nayan Village suit sea-view stays, while Naozhou Town near the pier works better for an early ferry departure.

Choose noodles, market seafood preparation or a harbour restaurant according to the route. Confirm price and weight before ordering so a short lighthouse stop does not become an uncontrolled meal delay.
