Island access and ferry choice
Techeng Island sits in the Zhanjiang Bay waterway off Xiashan District and works well as a half-day or day trip from the city. Haibin Pier is the lower-cost passenger-ferry and vehicle-ferry option; Fisherman's Wharf has more frequent, faster water buses; the island itself is free and only the boat is charged.
Ferry services run roughly 08:00–18:30. Haibin Pier passenger boats cost CNY 5 and take 15–20 minutes, while Fisherman's Wharf water buses cost CNY 15–30 and take 7–20 minutes; return times differ by pier.
Time and travel style
Allow 3–4 hours for the island sign, mangroves and resort beach, or a full day for Xian Tai Temple, Rainbow Steps, mangroves, the sheltered harbour, west-coast viewpoint and fishing-village meal. A two-day stay suits low-tide shore activities, boat trips and a homestay.
The island circuit is around 10 km. Walking works for a local section, but an e-bike or electric cart is more practical for connecting the island's cultural, wetland and sunset stops.

3–4 hours: mangrove and beach
After the ferry, see the Techeng Island sign, walk the mangrove wetland boardwalk and continue to the resort beach before returning to the pier. It suits a short island crossing and ecological walk.
Give the boardwalk and waterside steps enough time, then shorten the beach stop if the return boat requires it. Do not use the last boat as flexible extra sightseeing time.
One day: culture, ecology and sunset
Visit Xian Tai Temple, Rainbow Steps, the mangrove boardwalk, sheltered harbour and west-coast viewpoint, then eat in the fishing village. This combines island culture, ecology, returning boats and sunset for a first visit.
Keep the mangroves and harbour for the afternoon and the west coast for sunset. Confirm e-bike charge and return location before committing to the whole circuit.
Two days: shore activity and sea time
Use day one for island cycling and low-tide shore activity, then stay in a village homestay; use day two for a fishing trip, a small boat through mangroves and the morning market before departure. It suits families and visitors who do not want to race a ferry.

From temple to mangroves
Start at Xian Tai Temple for the island's cultural setting, make a brief stop at Rainbow Steps, then enter the mangrove boardwalk. The temple is a heritage pause, while the boardwalk is for slow observation of old trees, tidal habitat and birds.
Use the afternoon for the mangroves if you want softer light. Visitors planning shore activity should separate boardwalk time from the low-tide period rather than entering the flats on a rising tide.
Harbour, west coast and dinner
Continue from the mangroves to the sheltered harbour for returning fishing boats, then move to the west-coast viewpoint for sunset. This avoids repeatedly crossing the island in the final hours.
For seafood, confirm price, weight and preparation charge before buying. Visitors who buy directly from returning boats around 16:00 can then decide whether to use a homestay or market for cooking.
Get there
Haibin Pier and Fisherman's Wharf
Take bus 1 or 2 to Xiashan Bus Station, then walk about 200 m to Haibin Pier for the CNY 5 passenger boat; e-bikes can board for CNY 5. Car ferry is around CNY 100 per vehicle, plus CNY 5 per passenger, and holiday queues are longer.
For a faster crossing, use the Fisherman's Wharf water bus. Haibin Pier's last boat is around 17:20, while Fisherman's Wharf's is around 18:30, so use the same pier for both directions.
Island movement
E-bikes cost CNY 30–50 per day and four-seat electric carts cost CNY 60–120 per day; shared bikes and walking are alternatives for a smaller area. An e-bike is the practical choice for a temple–wetland–harbour–west-coast route.
Do not accept the first high rental quote after landing. Compare at accommodation or near the visitor centre, then confirm battery, return point and deposit before leaving.
Know before you go
Boats, tides and clothing
Holiday boats can queue, so begin walking back to the pier by 17:00. For shore activity, go at low tide in non-slip water shoes and gloves; mangrove flats, volcanic rock and shells can cut skin.
Sun, sea wind and ferry wind are all strong, so bring a hat, sunglasses, sun protection, sleeves and a light layer. Even an overcast late crossing can feel cool and windy.
Food, lodging and prices
Rental and seafood prices vary, so agree on e-bike terms, seafood unit price, weighing and preparation cost before purchase. Buying from the harbour then using a homestay for cooking is often more controlled than choosing high-priced beach restaurants.
Village homestays cost CNY 100–300 per night and suit lower-cost stays and shore tools; hot-spring resorts cost CNY 300–600 per person and suit an overnight resort experience. Choose accommodation with your return pier and first/last boat in mind.
