Location and entry

Wudangzhao Monastery is in Jihuluntu Sumu, Shiguai District, Baotou. Start at the main Visitor Center to buy tickets, then walk or take the scenic shuttle to the monastery area; the halls and the rear-hill viewpoint are on sloping ground.

Tickets and opening hours

The reference adult ticket price is CNY 60. Children up to 1.2 m tall enter free; children over 1.2 m and up to 1.4 m can buy half-price tickets. Eligible students receive a concession with a valid student ID. Older adults, military personnel and visitors with disabilities may qualify for other concessions; check the current rules and required documents when buying tickets.

Hours vary by season. From April 1 to October 15, the site is open 08:30–17:45, with last entry at 16:30. From October 16 to March 31, it is open 08:30–17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Use the schedule for your visit date.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1.5–2 hours for the shorter visit to the three main halls, plus extra time for transfers to and from the Visitor Center. A fuller visit that includes more halls and the rear-hill viewpoint takes about 2.5–3 hours, depending on walking pace and which halls are open.

Choose your visit

Murals and painted pillars at Suguqin Hall (苏古沁殿)

Suguqin Hall is the monastery’s main prayer hall, with murals and 80 painted pillars decorated with dragon designs. It is a good first stop if you want to focus on one representative hall.

Dongkuo’er Hall (洞阔尔殿) and Queyila Hall (却依拉殿)

Dongkuo’er Hall’s yellow exterior stands out among the monastery’s white buildings, and the hall contains a plaque bestowed by the Qianlong Emperor. Queyila Hall houses a bronze Maitreya Buddha about 10 m tall, the largest Buddha statue in the monastery.

Rear-hill viewpoint

From the rear-hill viewpoint, you can look down over the white walls, golden roofs and halls spread across the slopes. Reaching it involves uphill paths and steps, so treat it as an optional stop if you have limited stamina.

Who will enjoy the visit

Visitors interested in monastery architecture, murals and Buddhist art can see several representative halls on the short route. Allow more time if you want to explore additional halls and take in the full complex from above.

Build your day

Short route: the three main halls

From the Visitor Center, walk or take the shuttle to the monastery gate. Visit Suguqin Hall, Dongkuo’er Hall and Queyila Hall in that order, then return to the gate and the shuttle stop. Allow about 1.5–2 hours inside the monastery; transfers to and from the Visitor Center and shuttle waits are extra. If the trail is open and you have time and energy, add the rear-hill viewpoint as an optional extension.

Full route: add the Buddhist academy halls

For a longer visit, start at Suguqin Hall, then continue to Queyila Hall, Dongkuo’er Hall, Dangexide Hall (当圪希德殿), Lamiren Hall (喇弥仁殿), Ahui Hall (阿会殿) and Jinke Hall (金科殿). If time, energy and trail access allow, continue to the rear-hill viewpoint before descending. The full route takes about 2.5–3 hours inside the monastery, not including shuttle transfers or waiting time at the Visitor Center.

Follow the day’s open route

Both routes are flexible. Follow the monastery’s visitor signs and choose the halls that interest you most, allowing extra time for uphill paths and steps.

Get there

Driving and parking

The drive from central Baotou takes about 1–1.5 hours. Set your navigation destination to the Wudangzhao Visitor Center. Parking Lot 2 has EV chargers; ticketing and shuttle access to the monastery area are both handled at the Visitor Center.

From the Visitor Center to the monastery

The monastery gate is about 1 km from the Visitor Center. A round-trip scenic shuttle costs CNY 10 per person; walking takes about 15–20 minutes each way. Beyond the gate, expect to walk on sloping paths between the halls.

C7 tourist bus and return trip

The C7 tourist bus can be boarded at Donghe Bus Station (东河汽车站) or Baotou Long-Distance Bus Terminal (包头长途客运总站), but service is limited. Check the schedule for your travel date, especially the return service. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are scarce near the monastery, so confirm your return bus or arrange a private car in advance.

Know before you go

Steps, weather and photography

The visit includes stairs, so shoes with good grip are helpful. It can be windy on the mountain; bring a warm outer layer in autumn and winter. Photography is prohibited inside all halls.

Guided tours and extra activities

Official guided tours cover the site in detail, but staff may be limited during peak season and you may have to wait. If a shared group tour is available, ask whether you can join. Tibetan-style clothing rental and styling are offered near the entrance for CNY 128–168, at an additional charge.

Deer nearby

Small deer roam around the monastery grounds. Whether visitors can approach them depends on on-site management; do not chase, touch or feed them.

Food and breaks

The Visitor Center area has snacks, vegetarian restaurants and a Tibetan-style café. For Mongolian food, Ma Shoujiang Baotou Laoguanzi (马守疆包头老馆子) is an option back in central Baotou, not near the monastery entrance.
