Plan at a glance
A grassland area served by separate ranches
Xilamuren Grassland is in Xilamuren Town, Darhan Muminggan United Banner, Baotou. It is a grassland area where different ranches host visitors. There is no shared entrance, public visitor route or ticket covering every ranch, so choose a specific ranch before setting out.
Trip length and costs
A half-day visit can cover the grassland and horse riding at one selected ranch. Plan for 1–2 days if you want to stay in a Mongolian yurt, see the sunrise or join evening activities. Tickets, horse riding, meals, lodging and performances are arranged separately by each host ranch; check every item included in a package.
Where to enter
A common driving route approaches from Hohhot and takes about 1.5–2 hours. Xilamuren is still within Baotou. Set your navigation to the name and location of the specific ranch you have chosen.

Choose your visit
Grassland views and Hongger Ovoo
The open grassland is the main experience. Hongger Ovoo is a local high viewpoint overlooking the pasture. Before going there, ask your booked ranch about transport, access and that day’s arrangements.
Horse-riding routes
Riding routes and durations vary by ranch. Reference prices range from CNY 100 to CNY 380. Choose a ride that fits your time and ability; the ranch you book arranges the specific activity.
Staying in a Mongolian yurt
You can stay overnight in a Mongolian yurt, but private bathrooms, heating and meals vary by ranch and room type. Before booking, check the room facilities, meal prices and overnight heating; the booked room type determines what is provided.
Ranch activities and performances
Activities such as feeding sheep, wearing Mongolian clothing and watching sunrise or sunset require permission from the host ranch; confirm whether they cost extra. Hongger Ovoo Scenic Area has hosted *Monan Chuanqi* (《漠南传奇》), a large-scale equestrian show inspired by Mongolian history. Performance schedules and programs may change between seasons, so check which show is running on your travel date before booking tickets. *Qiangu Masong* (《千古马颂》) is a different performance in Hohhot.
Build your day
Half a day: activities at one ranch
Go to the ranch that has confirmed your visit, then follow its arrangements for a grassland walk, an ovoo visit or horse riding. Before setting out, confirm the riding duration and route, pickup and return transport. Keep a half-day visit focused on one ranch.
One or two days: lodging and grassland activities
Book a stay at one ranch and arrange horse riding, meals and yurt lodging around the activities it offers. Sunrise, sunset, sheep feeding and performances depend on weather, ranch permission and the day’s schedule.
Check the package before paying
Ask what is included for riding time, meals, room facilities, performances and return transport, and note which items cost extra. When comparing packages, compare the activities, their duration and transport arrangements one by one.
Get there
Navigate to a specific ranch
Driving from Hohhot takes about 1.5–2 hours. Set your navigation to the address of the ranch you have chosen; the area has no single entrance. If driving from Baotou, check the journey time for your specific ranch.
Driving, private cars and transfers
Public transport is inconvenient. Driving or hiring a car makes it easier to reach a ranch at its specific location. If hiring a car or booking a transfer package, agree on the pickup point, grassland arrival point and return time, and confirm where the vehicle can go with the host ranch.
Plan the return trip
Activity sites are spread out, and a car may not be easy to find at short notice. Confirm with the host ranch when activities end, where the vehicle will wait and the cost of returning to the city. Check item by item whether an evening show or overnight package includes transfers.
Know before you go
Horse-riding safety
Before riding, confirm whether an instructor, insurance and safety gear are provided, and ask about route restrictions. Beginners should follow the instructor and stay with the group; do not speed up or ride away from it.
Ranch access and services
Each ranch has its own guest areas, opening times and paid services. Stay within areas where your host has authorized you to go. Visits to an ovoo, sheep feeding and performances must also be arranged by the host; they do not grant access to other ranches.
Temperature changes and lodging
Temperatures vary considerably between day and night, so bring warm clothing even for summer nights. Mongolian yurts differ in private bathrooms, heating and bedding; confirm the facilities for the room in your booking.
Meals and performances
Choose dishes such as shouba rou (Mongolian boiled lamb), milk tea and a zhama feast (诈马宴) from the ranch’s menu and prices. Confirm serving sizes and costs before ordering. Equestrian shows have their own venues and schedules, so check the arrangements at your chosen ranch before leaving.
