Plan at a glance
A dry cave, chambers and a multi-level maze
Wangtiandong (望天洞) is a dry cave explored mainly on foot. About 2,100 metres of cave passages have been developed, with corridors, chambers and a multi-level maze. Unlike Benxi Water Cave (本溪水洞), which is visited by boat, Wangtiandong involves walking on steps and through narrow passages.
Allow time for the cave and return journey
The route may include stairs, narrow passages and the maze. The time needed depends on how many levels are open and how quickly you walk. Before setting out, confirm the areas open that day, the final exit and how to return to the parking area, then arrange transport both ways.

Choose your visit
See the skylight chamber and stalactites
Two cave openings stand side by side. Near the left opening, a stone-step passage goes down through Tongtian Bridge (通天桥) for a little over 30 metres to the first chamber, Juxian Hall (聚仙厅). Inside, look out for named formations such as Huaqing Pool (华清池), Chuilian Tingzheng (垂帘听政, “Ruling from Behind a Curtain”), Jingtailan (景泰蓝, “Cloisonné”) and Pearl Wall (珍珠壁). The order in which you see them depends on the route open that day.
Decide whether to enter the maze
About 1,100 metres of the maze have been explored. It has upper, middle and lower levels, and its narrowest point is only wide enough for one person. Before entering, find out which levels are open that day, where the route ends and how to return. If you are uncomfortable with narrow passages, repeated stairs or enclosed spaces, ask whether the park offers a shorter official route.

Build your day
From the designated entrance to the first chamber
The Benxi municipal government describes a stone-step passage near the left cave opening that goes down through Tongtian Bridge about 30 metres to Juxian Hall. For your visit, enter through the entrance designated by the scenic area and follow the route open that day. Do not choose an entry or exit direction based on the position of a cave opening.
Choose between the maze and a shorter route
The maze has upper, middle and lower levels, as well as narrow passages. Before entering, confirm which areas are open, where the route ends, whether there is an official short route and how it returns to the entrance. If no clear turnaround route is available, stay on the marked path and do not enter deeper side passages on your own.
Return to the parking area and leave
Before the visit, obtain the walking or transfer arrangements from the exit to the parking area and confirm where your vehicle will wait. If you are not driving, also arrange the last transfer back to Huanren town or the station. Do not enter a one-way route that exits through another cave opening unless you have arranged the return transfer.
Get there
Navigation and driving
Search for “望天洞景区” (“Wangtiandong Scenic Area”) in your navigation app. The address is Wanwanchuan Village (湾湾川村), Yahe Township (雅河乡), Huanren Manchu Autonomous County (桓仁满族自治县). The scenic area information number is 024-48202332. If you are driving, confirm before departure whether the parking area, ticket entrance and cave exit are in the same place, then choose your cave route.
Getting there and back without a car
Arrange a return vehicle from Huanren town or the railway station to the scenic area in advance, and confirm the pick-up point and departure time after the visit. Do not rely on finding a car at the last minute or on an unconfirmed fixed fare. If the cave route may end at another opening, arrange the return transfer first.
Know before you go
Tickets, opening hours and temporary notices
Before setting out, confirm the standard ticket price, accepted discount documents, last entry time and whether the scenic area is operating normally through its official channels. The operator may issue temporary closure, reopening and limited-time discount notices, so check ticketing and opening information for your travel date.
Cave temperature and seasonal conditions
An official summer 2026 activity notice gives the cave temperature as about 4–6°C, so bring a warm outer layer. In spring or winter, or after rain or snow, mist may rise in Juxian Hall. Rain and snow can also affect outdoor steps and access, so check the weather and the scenic area’s notices before setting out.
Narrow steps and cave etiquette
The cave has stairs, narrow passages and multi-level branches. Follow marked routes, stay out of unlit areas, and do not touch or climb on the stalactites. Before buying a ticket, visitors with limited mobility or discomfort in narrow spaces should ask about the route and exit arrangements for that day, then decide whether the visit is suitable.
