A World Heritage mountain city and its trails

Wunü Mountain City (五女山城, also written Wunu Mountain City) is an early Koguryo archaeological site where mountain walking and a visit to the remains come together. It is part of the UNESCO-listed property Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom. Qiyun Trail (启运路) has 999 stone steps leading to the West Gate site (西门遗址), with most of the climb concentrated along this section. Plan the visit according to your fitness.

More than 50 early Koguryo remains have been identified on the mountain, including walls, palaces, barracks, dwellings, lookout posts, watchtowers, storage facilities and water reservoirs. To understand how the site is laid out, visit the museum and walk around the mountain city on the same day.

Visit time and tickets

The standard route takes about three to four hours. Admission is RMB 70 and the park shuttle ticket is RMB 35; they are sold separately. Admission discounts do not apply to the shuttle ticket.

Tickets and visit details

View visit options for this attraction and confirm the visit date and current arrangements before you go.

Choose your visit

Follow the complete standard route

A full visit starts with tickets at the visitor centre, followed by the museum. Then take the park bus to the West Gate service area and climb the mountain. After visiting the site, take the shuttle down from the South Gate. The full route takes about three to four hours and includes 999 stone steps and walking around the remains.

Assess the climb if you have limited stamina

Qiyun Trail involves a sustained climb and stone steps. If you have knee or ankle problems, walk slowly or are not suited to a long mountain hike, ask the park before departure whether there is a suitable way to visit. Do not estimate the standard route time from shorter itineraries posted online.

Treat sunrise as a special visit

Places such as Dianjiangtai (点将台) offer views over the mountain lake and sunrise. Entry before dawn is arranged only for special events. Before travelling, obtain the sunrise notice for your date and confirm the entry time, special ticket, transfers and weather-related cancellation rules.

For a separate cave-walking visit in Huanren, see Wangtian Cave.

Build your day

Follow the park’s standard route

Buy tickets at the visitor centre and visit the museum. From the museum exit, take the park bus to the West Gate service area, pass the mountain entrance check and explore the mountain-city remains. Then take the shuttle from the South Gate parking area to the car park at the foot of the mountain. The full route takes about three to four hours; follow the park signs for the exact pick-up and drop-off points.

Allow time for steps and transfers

The mountain route includes stone steps and walking among the ruins. Before setting out, confirm the operating hours of the museum, park bus and shuttle down from the South Gate. If you walk slowly, enter earlier to leave enough time for transport after the visit.

If you have limited time

For a shorter visit, prioritise the visitor centre and museum, then decide whether to take the bus up the mountain. The hike requires arranging transport from the standard route’s entrance to its South Gate exit. If you cannot complete the three-to-four-hour route, ask the park whether there is an official turnaround point and transfer along the way; do not turn back on the mountain trail without confirmation.

Get there

Navigate to the visitor centre

Search for “五女山景区” (“Wunü Mountain Scenic Area”) in your navigation app. The visitor centre (游客中心) is at 33 Taishan Road (泰山路), Huanren Town (桓仁镇). The scenic area information number is 024-48196666; call ahead to confirm the map location and entrance for the day.

Train, road and park transfers

Wunüshan Passenger Railway Station (五女山客运火车站) is about 8.2 kilometres from the park, and Huanren Bus Station (桓仁汽车客运站) is about 7.8 kilometres away. If you are not driving, arrange a transfer from the station to the visitor centre in advance, and confirm the last service back to Huanren town or the railway station.

Know before you go

Regular hours and special sunrise visits

Regular ticket sales run from 08:00 to 16:00, and the park closes at 17:00. Sunrise visits have separate dates, tickets and transfers; they are not covered by the regular daytime ticket. If you plan to enter before dawn, follow the notice for your travel date.

Spring opening dates and winter access vary by year. If you are visiting during a seasonal transition, confirm the opening and ticket-sale dates for that year before setting out.

Protecting the site and preparing for the weather

Protect the remains: do not climb on, touch or carve them. The park warns that paths may be slippery in rain or snow and that it can be windy on the mountain. Wear suitable hiking shoes and check the weather. Clouds over the mountain and sunrise depend on conditions and are not guaranteed.

International visitors using a passport as ID should check which documents are accepted, what payment methods are available and how tickets are verified on arrival.
