Location, reservation and opening
Han Wen Gong Temple stands on the western foot of Han Mountain, opposite the eastern end of Guangji Bridge. Entry is free, but reserve in advance through the Chaowan Fengcheng or Chaozhou Ancient City Tourism Guide mini-program and enter with ID; visitors aged 60 and above do not need a reservation.
It is open Tuesday–Sunday from 08:30–17:30, with final entry at 17:00, and is closed on Mondays except public holidays. Entry may be restricted once the visitor count exceeds 800.

About 1 hour: temple and viewpoint
Enter through the archway, climb the 51 main steps to the principal shrine, then continue to Shilang Pavilion for views over the Han River, Guangji Bridge and the old city.
1.5–2 hours: the complete hillside route
Visit the entrance archway, Tiannan Beisheng inscription corridor, principal shrine, Shilang Pavilion, Yunyuan Pavilion and Yaozuo Pavilion before descending the stone steps.
Combine it with the old city
Walk from Kaiyuan Temple through Paifang Street, Guangji Gate Tower and Guangji Bridge, then cross the river to the temple. Return to the riverfront after your visit if you plan to see the evening light show.
Build your day
Start with the shrine and inscriptions
The 51 main steps correspond to Han Yu’s age when he arrived in Chaozhou. Allow time for the pale-green polished brick walls and Ming- and Qing-era stelae at the principal shrine, then continue to the Tiannan Beisheng corridor.
Save the highest viewpoint for later
Shilang Pavilion provides broad views of the Han River, Guangji Bridge and the old city. Visit in the later afternoon if you want softer light or sunset views, then descend by the stone path.
Get there
Rail and bus access
From Chaoshan Station, take the K1 or K2 bus to the old city, or a taxi in about 30 minutes. Buses 10, 11 and 110 stop at Han Wen Gong Temple; the entrance is a short walk from the stop.
Driving and walking routes
Parking near the temple is limited, so arrive early or park outside the old city and walk in. Crossing Guangji Bridge from the old city is the most natural way to combine the temple with the central walking route.
Know before you go
Reservation, closure and bridge return
Do not schedule this visit on Monday. If you cross from Guangji Bridge and intend to return by the same route, complete the required bridge-ticket registration first; return cutoffs are 15:30 on weekdays and 16:30 on weekends.
Steps and photography
The site has many stairs, so wear walking shoes. Phone photography is generally possible, but do not use a tripod; keep quiet indoors and do not step on thresholds. Around 08:30–10:00 or after 16:00 is usually most comfortable.
