Street layout and entry points
Paifang Street runs through the heart of the old city on Taiping Road in Xiangqiao District. It is about 1.6 kilometres long, with 23 Ming- and Qing-era stone archways, arcade buildings and connecting historic lanes. Enter from the south gate near Kaiyuan Temple, or from the north gate near Guangji Gate Tower and Guangji Bridge.
The street is free to enter and open throughout the day. Shops and nearby venues keep their own schedules; for walking, food stops and photography, daytime through around 21:00 is the easiest window to plan.
What kind of visit it suits
Paifang Street is for a slow walk through architecture, food and old-city lanes rather than a single ticketed attraction. First-time visitors can combine it with Kaiyuan Temple, Guangji Gate Tower and Guangji Bridge in one day.

Around 3 hours: south gate to the Han River
Enter from the south gate, stop at the “Chaozhou” character wall and selected archways, then visit Kaiyuan Temple. Continue north past the Bangyan Archway and Guangji Gate Tower, finishing at Guangji Bridge for river views and sunset.
Around 8 hours: a full old-city day
In the morning, visit Chaozhou West Lake, Xu Fuma Mansion, Paifang Street and Kaiyuan Temple. Spend the afternoon at Guangji Gate Tower, Guangji Bridge and Han Wen Gong Temple, then eat on Xima Road and watch the Guangji Bridge light show.
Two slower days: old city first, outer sights second
Use day one for Paifang Street, Kaiyuan Temple, Guangji Bridge, the light show and Xima Road. On day two, visit Thai Buddhist Hall, Longhu Ancient Village and Qinglong Ancient Temple, avoiding repeated travel between the old city and outer areas.
Build your day
South to north: archways and Kaiyuan Temple
Start from the south gate and walk along Taiping Road, pausing at the stone archways. The Bangyan, Zhuangyuan and Sijinshi archways are useful landmarks; Kaiyuan Temple sits close to the southern part of the street and can be included naturally in the walk.
Middle section: plan food stops flexibly
The main street is convenient for small snacks and short rests, but it does not need to be your main meal stop. If you want oyster omelettes, fermented-beancurd chicken wings, spring rolls, sugar-onion pancakes or rice-noodle dishes, use Xima Road as the food stop in your route.
Northern end: gate tower, bridge and night views
Continue north to Guangji Gate Tower and Guangji Bridge. If you plan to walk onto the bridge, leave enough time for the 17:00 ticket cutoff; if you are staying for the opening process or the evening light show, place the bridgehead in the afternoon and evening rather than lingering on Paifang Street too late.

From Chaoshan Station and around town
From Chaoshan Station, take the K1 or K2 bus, or a taxi, to Paifang Street in about 30 minutes. The old-city core is best covered on foot; shared e-bikes are practical for parking areas and outer sights, at a reference cost of 30–50 CNY per day.
Driving and parking
Use Fengcheng Park Parking Lot, the Ancient Temple parking area or the Chaozhou West Lake rear-hill parking area, then walk, take a short taxi ride or use a shared e-bike into the street. Do not plan to find parking at Paifang Street or Guangji Bridge itself, as the stone-paved core has restrictions and few spaces.
Know before you go
Crowds and walking comfort
Paifang Street is usually more comfortable before 09:00 or after 16:00. The route involves extensive stone paving, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes; bring a light outer layer if continuing to the riverfront after dark.
Food, shopping and prices
Restaurants on the main street can cost more than nearby lanes, so ask about price, portion size and how items are charged before ordering. For fried snacks such as fermented-beancurd chicken wings, choose freshly fried, clearly priced options; compare package size and price before buying tea, beef balls or other souvenirs.
Transport and route timing
Do not overpack a day with parking, the Paifang Street walk, bridge entry and the evening light show. If heading to Guangji Bridge, allow enough time to enter before ticket sales end at 17:00; when drivers recommend restaurants or shops, compare distance, price and suitability before deciding.
