Area and entry points
Chaozhou Ancient City is in Xiangqiao District. The main visiting area covers Paifang Street and its surrounding lanes, Guangji Gate Tower, Guangji Bridge and Kaiyuan Temple. You can enter from the south end of Paifang Street at Taiping Road, Guangji Gate Tower, or the east gate of Chaozhou West Lake; the core sights are close together and are best explored on foot.
The historic district is free to enter and accessible throughout the day, but individual venues, the bridge and temples keep separate schedules. Guangji Bridge costs 20 CNY to visit, stops selling tickets at 17:00 and begins opening for river traffic at 17:30. Han Wen Gong Temple is free but requires a reservation and is closed on Mondays.
Who it suits
This is a good base for combining historic architecture, lane walks, Chaozhou food and evening views over the Han River in one day. It works especially well for first-time visitors, architecture lovers and travellers who prefer a slower itinerary with regular food stops.

3–4 hours: the essential old-city route
Start on Paifang Street, stopping for a few snacks and the stone archways, then visit Kaiyuan Temple. Continue to Guangji Gate Tower and Guangji Bridge, and finish by the Han River for sunset or the bridge-opening process.
Around 8 hours: a first-visit day
Begin at Chaozhou West Lake, then visit Xu Fuma Mansion, Paifang Street and Kaiyuan Temple in the morning. Spend the afternoon at Guangji Gate Tower, Guangji Bridge and Han Wen Gong Temple; in the evening, eat on Xima Road before returning to the riverfront for the Guangji Bridge light show.
Two slower days
Use the first day for Paifang Street, Kaiyuan Temple, Guangji Bridge and Xima Road. On day two, visit Chaozhou West Lake, Qinglong Ancient Temple, Thai Buddhist Hall, Han Wen Gong Temple and Longhu Ancient Village, so that the old-city walk and out-of-town travel are not squeezed into the same day.
Build your day
Morning: lanes and temple architecture
Enter from the south end of Paifang Street, look at the stone archways and arcade buildings, then visit Kaiyuan Temple for its red walls, porcelain inlay work and historic halls. Paifang Street is usually quieter before 09:00; photographers can also use the later afternoon light around the temple.
Afternoon: gate tower, river and bridge
Walk from Kaiyuan Temple to Guangji Gate Tower, then continue to Guangji Bridge. If you plan to walk onto the bridge, allow enough time to buy and use your ticket before the 17:00 ticket cutoff; after the bridge begins opening, move to the riverside or the north bank for wider views.
Evening: food and the light show
Have dinner or late snacks on Xima Road, then return to the Han River for the Guangji Bridge light show. The itinerary provides 20:00 and 21:30 showtimes; allow extra time for transport after the show and follow the arrangements in place that evening.
Get there
Arriving from Chaoshan Station
From Chaoshan Station, take the K1 or K2 bus, or a taxi, to the old city; the journey takes about 30 minutes. Get off around the outer edge of the historic district, then continue on foot into the Paifang Street and Guangji Gate Tower area.
Driving and local movement
Drivers can use Beiguan Parking Lot, the Chaozhou West Lake rear-hill parking area, or other paid parking outside the old city. The stone-paved core has traffic restrictions and limited spaces, so do not plan on finding parking inside the main walking area.
Walk between the central sights. For outer areas, shared e-bikes are available at a reference cost of 30–50 CNY per day; wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for the stone paving.
Know before you go
Crowds and bridge timing
Paifang Street and Guangji Bridge are busiest on public holidays. Visit Paifang Street before 09:00 or after 16:00 where possible, and build the bridge ticket cutoff and opening time into your route if you want to watch the process from the riverbank.
Accommodation, food and comfort
Older houses inside the old city may have limited sound insulation, so travellers who value quiet nights may prefer accommodation just outside the Paifang Street walking area or near the riverside promenade. Paifang Street is useful for small snacks, while Xima Road is a better place to schedule a fuller meal; ask about price and portion size before ordering.
Raw marinated Chaozhou seafood may not suit sensitive stomachs. Dress respectfully for religious sites such as Kaiyuan Temple, avoiding flip-flops and sleeveless tops.
