Location, entrance and tickets
Datong Museum is at 506 Taihe Road in Pingcheng District, with the entrance on the south side of the building. Navigate to Datong Museum. Admission is free, but real-name reservations must be made 7 days in advance through the official WeChat account. Visitors from mainland China enter with the ID card used for the reservation. Visitors using passports or other identification should confirm the reservation and entry procedure in advance. Holiday slots may fill quickly.
Opening hours and visit length
Typical hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with entry stopping at 16:30; it is closed on Mondays except during statutory holidays. Based on the galleries currently open, allow 1.5–2 hours and start on the third floor before working down. If the exhibition layout changes, the actual visit time will change with it.

Galleries currently available
The currently viewable areas include the “梵语清音 (Fanyu Qingyin)” Buddhist art and sculpture exhibition on the third floor and the second-floor “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II)” gallery. Highlights include the pottery figurine array from the tomb of Sima Jinlong, a stone coffin bed, column bases and some Northern Wei blue glassware. The first-floor “沧桑代地 (Cangsang Daidi)” gallery provides a history of Datong from prehistoric times to the Han dynasty; the specific cases open that day determine what can be seen.
Building and suitable visitors
The museum's double-S, dragon-shaped exterior is worth looking at before or after entering. Visitors interested in Northern Wei history, Buddhist sculpture and excavated objects can make “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II)” the main focus. It also works for a short history visit with children, although several core galleries are closed, so the route should follow the areas actually open.

Build your day
A 1.5–2-hour visit from top to bottom
Walk down from the third floor to the second and then the first. Start with “梵语清音 (Fanyu Qingyin),” continue to “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II)” for the pottery figurine array from Sima Jinlong's tomb and other highlights, and finish with “沧桑代地 (Cangsang Daidi)” to close the timeline from prehistory to the Han dynasty. You can pass by the museum shop before leaving. The visit takes about 1.5–2 hours, and the reservation slot must cover the time you spend inside.
The second-floor priority stop
The Sima Jinlong tomb display in “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II)” has more than 200 pottery figurines, making the second floor the main stop for the visit. Continue to the stone coffin bed, column bases and some Northern Wei blue glassware; the exact cases depend on the open galleries that day.
A short route of about 1 hour
With only about 1 hour, prioritise “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II)” on the second floor, then add the third-floor Buddhist sculpture exhibition or the first-floor introductory gallery if they are open. Some well-known objects may be temporarily off display because of exhibition changes, so do not build a short visit around one individual object.
Get there
Bus and taxi
Take buses 38, 64, 65, 66 or 70 and get off at Datong Museum or Datong University East, then walk to the south-side entrance. A taxi from central Datong or Datong South Railway Station is also convenient; use Datong Museum as the navigation target.
Connecting with nearby stops
Datong Art Museum is opposite, so the two buildings can be combined if both are open that day; their entry rules are separate. After the visit, consider Longjuxiang Shaomai Restaurant (Xijing branch), Kaige Restaurant (Huabeixingcheng branch) or Datong University Food Street. Food time and the museum reservation slot should be counted separately.
Exterior and interior photography
The double-S dragon-like exterior, curved corridors and red interior walls are architectural details to notice before or after the visit. The area in front of the pottery figurine display is suitable for recording the overall exhibition. Whether photography is allowed and whether equipment is restricted follow the gallery signs and staff instructions.

Closed galleries and temporary changes
The core galleries “魏都平城（一） (Weidu Pingcheng I),” “辽金西京 (Liaojin Xijing)” and “明清重镇 (Ming–Qing Zhongzhen)” are currently closed. The open “魏都平城（二） (Weidu Pingcheng II),” Buddhist sculpture displays and introductory galleries may also change. Review the latest notice in the museum's official WeChat account before setting out, then follow the open areas announced at the entrance and by gallery staff.

Security staff check reservation times. Visitors from mainland China should bring the ID card used for the reservation. Visitors using passports or other identification should confirm the reservation and entry procedure in advance. Free admission still requires a real-name reservation. The area in front of the pottery figurines, the Buddhist galleries and the curved corridor can be used for photography where permitted; follow the gallery signs on photography and equipment.
