Plan at a glance
Location and access
Datong Volcanic Cluster is a group of separate volcanic sites across Yunzhou District rather than a single gated attraction. Tiger Mountain (老虎山), Jinshan (金山) and Langwo Mountain (狼窝山) each have their own navigation target, parking and walking route. The park is free and requires no reservation. The area is currently open all day with no regular closing day, but road access and individual facilities can change, so check conditions when you visit.
How much time to allow
Starting from central Datong, allow 3–4 hours for a complete route covering Tiger Mountain, Jinshan and Langwo Mountain. A quick route to the Tiger Mountain viewpoint takes about 1.5–2 hours. The volcanoes are several kilometres apart, public transport is inconvenient and taxis can be difficult to find for the return, so self-driving or a reliable arranged vehicle is the practical choice.

Tiger Mountain, Jinshan and Langwo Mountain
An asphalt road reaches the top of Tiger Mountain (老虎山), which is good for a panorama of the volcanic cluster. Jinshan (金山) has a volcanic crater, children's facilities, a café and possible spacesuit photography that may change. Langwo Mountain (狼窝山) has a wooden boardwalk of about 2 kilometres around the crater for viewing the landform. Visitors interested in geology, family activities or outdoor photography can choose among the three according to road conditions that day.
The rough conditions at Black Mountain
Black Mountain (黑山) has a Ming-dynasty beacon tower and views towards Jinshan and Langwo Mountain. The approach is a rough, potholed dirt road that demands a suitable vehicle, and a sedan risks scraping its underside. It suits self-drivers who have checked the road, vehicle and signal conditions. For an ordinary city day trip, Black Mountain can be skipped.
The role of the three main stops
Tiger Mountain (老虎山) provides the panorama, Jinshan (金山) the crater and temporary family activities, and Langwo Mountain (狼窝山) the 2-kilometre boardwalk and crater landscape. This order keeps the driving direction and focus of each stop clear. Facilities at Jinshan and Langwo Mountain still depend on what is operating on site.
For a city-centre heritage route to pair with the open landscape, see Datong Ancient City.
Build your day
A complete 3–4-hour route
Leave central Datong for Tiger Mountain (老虎山) and follow the asphalt road to the summit viewpoint. Continue to Jinshan (金山) for the crater and family activities, then finish at Langwo Mountain (狼窝山) with its wooden boardwalk and crater views. Count the driving, parking and walking after getting out of the car separately at each site. The full route takes about 3–4 hours; after Langwo Mountain, return to the city by the self-driving route.
A quick route of 1.5–2 hours
With limited time, navigate directly to “大同市老虎山 (Datongshi Laohushan),” drive to the summit viewpoint and look over the volcanic cluster from a safe area before leaving by the same road. This short route does not include Jinshan's temporary activities or Langwo Mountain's roughly 2-kilometre boardwalk. It suits a trip focused on the overall landform, or a day when weather and roads do not favour a longer stop.
Get there
Driving and navigation
Use a separate navigation target for each volcano, such as “大同市老虎山 (Datongshi Laohushan)” or “大同市狼窝山 (Datongshi Langwoshan).” After arriving, follow the car park and the road open that day. Self-driving is the most practical way to move between the sites; there is no unified shuttle and public transport is difficult to use for a smooth circuit.
Vehicles and return from Black Mountain
Before driving to Black Mountain, check the dirt-road condition and the vehicle's ground clearance. An SUV is more suitable than an ordinary sedan, but the road still determines whether it is sensible to continue. Some summits may have no mobile signal, so prepare the return vehicle, an offline map and a way for companions to stay in contact before entering remote sections.
Decide on Black Mountain last
Black Mountain has no fully upgraded asphalt road to the summit. Check the weather, vehicle condition and phone signal before adding it to the route; if the vehicle is unsuitable, continue with the Tiger Mountain, Jinshan and Langwo Mountain circuit. After the main route, return to Datong for simpler food and supplies.
Know before you go
Sun, wind and supplies
There is little shade on the mountains, the wind can be strong and places to buy supplies are limited. Bring drinking water, sun protection and shoes suitable for dirt roads and boardwalks. If the weather worsens, finish the high-point stop and return to the vehicle by the same road; do not enter an unguarded or dangerous edge for a crater photo.
Temporary activities and food
Spacesuit rental at Jinshan is about CNY 30–40 per suit. The café, children's facilities and stone-picking experience may change with the season or the day's operation. Agate picking is mainly an experience, and finding high-quality stones is not guaranteed. Food options in the park are limited, so returning to central Datong after the route is more reliable; if you continue to Datong Earth Forest, add the extra driving time.
