Location, entrance and tickets
Yongan Temple is on Yong'an West Street in Hunyuan County. Its entrance is in the Drum Tower North Lane, and the main area to visit is Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall (传法正宗殿). The adult ticket is about CNY 20, while a combined ticket with nearby Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺) is about CNY 30. No reservation is currently required and tickets can be bought on site; the two temples follow separate opening and ticket-check arrangements.
Seasonal hours and visit length
Typical summer hours, from May to September, are 08:00–18:00. Spring and autumn, March, April and October, are 08:00–17:30; winter, January, February, November and December, is 08:30–16:30. About 30 minutes is enough for the exterior of the hall, while 1–1.5 hours allows time for the central axis and Yuan-dynasty murals. Enter before the seasonal last-entry time.

Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall and Yuan murals
Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall (传法正宗殿) retains its Yuan-dynasty structure, with a single-eaved hip roof covered in yellow glazed tiles. Large brick inscriptions reading “庄严 (Zhuangyan)” appear on the exterior wall. Inside, Yuan-dynasty Water-and-Land Ritual murals cover about 180 square metres and depict 895 divine figures. Their raised, gilded details are the temple's main highlight.

Visitors interested in historic buildings and murals can allow 1–1.5 hours and use a guide to understand the hall structure, inscriptions and mural narrative. Anyone looking for a quiet historic stop can focus on the exterior of Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall (传法正宗殿) and the front courtyard. Families and cultural travellers can combine Yongan Temple with neighbouring Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺) in one county-town walk; with a combined ticket, each temple still requires a separate entrance check and follows its own opening hours.

The yellow, green and blue glazed roof can be viewed in full from the square in front of Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall (传法正宗殿), while the “庄严 (Zhuangyan)” brick inscription is on the exterior wall. Look at the outside first, then decide whether to use the combined ticket for Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺), keeping the two short stops distinct.

Build your day
A 1–1.5-hour highlights route
Enter through Drum Tower North Lane and follow the central axis through the gate and front courtyard. First look at the “庄严 (Zhuangyan)” brick inscription and the yellow, green and blue glazed roof outside Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall (传法正宗殿), then enter to view the Yuan-dynasty Water-and-Land Ritual murals. The complete visit takes about 1–1.5 hours; follow the site's rules for mural viewing, with a guide before entering or at the designated position inside.
A 30-minute stop and Yuanjue Temple
With only half an hour, go directly to Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall for a brief look at the exterior, inscription and roof, then leave. If Yuanjue Temple is open, it is about a 3–5-minute walk away. A combined ticket covers entry to both, but each temple still uses its own entrance for ticket checks and keeps its own opening hours.
Get there
From Datong to Hunyuan County
From Datong East Coach Station, take intercity bus 901-1 and get off at Hunyuan Post Office, then walk about 10 minutes to Yongan Temple. You can also take a tourist shuttle from Datong's old city or Datong South Railway Station to the Hengshan Visitor Centre, then use a ride-hailing car or taxi for about 10 minutes, at about CNY 10. The tourist shuttle does not end at Yongan Temple.
Connecting from Hanging Temple and Mount Hengshan
From Hanging Temple or Mount Hengshan, take the shuttle back to the Hengshan Visitor Centre, then take a taxi or ride-hailing car after leaving the centre. The ride to Yongan Temple takes about 10 minutes and costs about CNY 10–20. Yongan Temple is about 4 kilometres from the Hengshan Visitor Centre; the actual trip still involves the connection between the centre and Hunyuan County town.
The four-kilometre connection
Yongan Temple is about 4 kilometres from the Hengshan Visitor Centre. Parking in the county town is relatively convenient. Before returning to Datong or continuing to the next stop, arrange your departure around the day's vehicle and road conditions.
Know before you go
Mural protection and photography
Photography and flash use are strictly prohibited inside Chuanfa Zhengzong Hall. Do not shine a personal torch, phone light or other strong light at the murals. The dim interior is part of the conservation environment. From the front square, take a full view of the hall where permitted; inside, follow the no-photography signs and staff instructions.
Guides, parking and food
The murals contain many figures and a detailed narrative, so an on-site guide can help with the viewing order. Without a guide, start with the exterior structure and then read the walls by section. Parking in Hunyuan County town is relatively convenient, and spaces are usually available near the temple. Qiaosao Hengshan Noodles and Caijia Restaurant can fit into a county-town stop; restaurant hours depend on the day.
