How to Visit
1

Travel from central Dunhuang by taxi, private driver, or self-drive

The site is about 15–20 km from town, with a self-drive journey of roughly 20–30 minutes. If using Tourist Bus No. 3 or a minibus from near Dunhuang Bookstore, allow extra time because service and departure times are not fixed.

Tip:Do not make the return connection too tight when using public transport or a minibus.
2

Walk the five themed streets in order

After entering, follow Dunhuang Street, Gaochang Street, Ganzhou Street, Xingqing Street, then Bianliang Street. Allow 1.5-2 hours; admission is CNY 40, with half price for students.

Tip:This is a film set rather than an archaeological site, so visitors expecting excavated ruins may be disappointed.
3

Schedule photos for late afternoon

For the Zhuque Gate tower, city gate, and side lanes, plan your main photos after 16:00 and wear flat shoes suitable for stone and dirt paths. If the main street is busy, move into the side lanes.

Tip:Side lanes help avoid crowds, but do not wait so long for empty photos that you miss your return transport.
Highlights
  • A recreated historic town built for the film Dunhuang, later used by many other productions.
  • Five streets with architectural settings for Dunhuang, Gaochang, Ganzhou, Xingqing, and Bianliang.
  • The Zhuque Gate tower looks over the town and toward Mingsha Mountain.
  • Gates, inns, and side lanes work well for period, martial-arts, or Western Regions-style photography.
Insider Tips

When taking a private western-route day trip, the Ancient City can be included as one stop; sort out return transport before visiting if travelling independently.

Treat any performances as optional rather than a guaranteed part of the visit; the main experience is the streets and film-set architecture.

There is little shade at midday. Entering later reduces sun exposure while preserving time for photos.

This is best treated as a short stop for film sets, costume photography, and a walk, rather than an all-day main attraction.
