How to Visit
1

Treat the statue as a short stop on a city walk

It stands in the landscaped traffic circle at the intersection of Shazhou South Road and Yangguan Avenue, about 200 m on foot from Shazhou Night Market. This is a traffic roundabout.

Tip:Do not cross vehicle lanes to get closer.
2

Photograph from safe pedestrian areas

Take photos from the pavement and safe crossing areas, starting with the full silhouette and then the backhand pipa-playing pose. The statue is free to view and does not need a long visit.

Tip:Allow 15–30 minutes before continuing to the night market or other central sights.
3

Choose daylight or combine the stop with the night market

Visit in daylight to retain detail in the granite sculpture. If visiting around dusk, combine it with Shazhou Night Market.

Tip:Night lighting and traffic change the view and restrict safe standing positions, so do not remain in vehicle areas for photos.
Highlights
  • One of the most recognisable city landmarks in central Dunhuang.
  • Based on the Tang-dynasty musician image in Mogao Cave 112.
  • The reversed-pipa pose combines dance movement with Silk Road musical culture.
  • A free, short stop on a walk between central Dunhuang and Shazhou Night Market.
Insider Tips

There is no need to circle the roundabout; choose an angle from a safe pedestrian area for a complete view.

Daylight is better for sculpture detail, while evening works best when combined with the night-market itinerary.

The statue is not an enclosed attraction and has no single operator or visitor facilities, so do not allow time for ticketing, entry checks, or rest services.

To understand the mural origin, look for the reversed-pipa dance-and-music motif during Mogao Caves-related visits.
