How to Visit
1

Use the Guazhou South exit

When driving from Jiayuguan toward Dunhuang, or in the reverse direction, leave the expressway at Guazhou South and follow navigation to the sculpture group. It is still more than ten kilometres after the exit.

Tip:Do not mistake the service area for the destination.
2

Keep the stop short and prepared

Entry is free and no ticket time is needed. Treat it as a 20-40 minute Gobi stop, and prepare water, sun protection, and vehicle supplies before arriving.

Tip:There is no shade in the Gobi, so arriving without water or sun protection makes even a short stop uncomfortable.
3

Photograph the main sculpture first

Go first to the area near the head of the Son of the Earth sculpture, then move to the side for wider compositions. The head area is usually busier.

Tip:Completing your main framing first reduces waiting.
4

Continue through the sculpture group if time allows

Continue on foot to works including Boundaryless, Han Wudi’s Grandeur, Wind Speaker, and Gobi Ark. They are spread across open ground.

Tip:Stopping at each one takes more energy than photographing only the sleeping-child sculpture.
Highlights
  • A monumental sleeping-child sculpture assembled from red sandstone in the Gobi.
  • The work’s scale is clearest when viewed from a distance.
  • Boundaryless uses a metal framework to recreate the outline of architecture from Dunhuang murals.
  • Several outdoor installations create a continuous Gobi art stop.
  • Best combined with a self-drive route through Guazhou, rather than a dedicated multi-hour stop in the heat.
Insider Tips

There is no shade in the Gobi. A hat, sunglasses, sun protection, and water matter more than photo props.

To avoid crowds, photograph side views or wider scenes first, then return to the head area.

Take photos from roads and open visitor areas; do not climb on sculptures or cross barriers.

Vendors near the car park sell fruit, but do not treat food or supplies as guaranteed services.

In strong wind, protect cameras, phones, and hats; fine sand can enter equipment ports.
