How to Visit
1

Arrange a reliable return from central Dunhuang

Drive or hire a car from central Dunhuang, about 35 km away and roughly 40 minutes by road. If using a local bus towards Yangguan, write down the return departure first; services are infrequent.

Tip:It is not practical to wait at the site and arrange transport at the last minute.
2

Arrive well before the seasonal ticket-sales cutoff

In the high season, from 1 April to 30 November, the caves are open 08:30-17:30 and ticket sales end at 17:00. In the low season, from 1 December to 31 March, they are open 09:00-17:00 and ticket sales end at 16:30. The full ticket is CNY 30.

Tip:Do not arrive at the ticket-sales cutoff, as you still need to store belongings and join the visit arrangement.
3

Join the on-site guided group for the open caves

Join the on-site guided group for the open caves, usually 4-5. Look especially for the multi-period mural layers in Caves 4 and 5, the tent-shaped ceiling of Cave 11, the Uyghur style of Cave 16, and the Amitayurdhyana Sutra Transformation in Cave 18.

Tip:Join the on-site guided group for the open caves.
4

Store restricted belongings and follow cave-protection rules

Before entering the cave area, store backpacks, cameras, selfie sticks and video equipment. Do not take photos or video, and do not touch murals or sculptures. Heavy rain, snow or strong sandstorms can close the caves.

Tip:Place this visit earlier in the day when the weather is unsettled.
Highlights
  • Western Thousand Buddha Caves are part of the Dunhuang cave complex, cut into cliffs above the Dang River.
  • Caves 4 and 5 preserve visible mural layers from the Sui, Tang and Uyghur periods.
  • Cave 11 has a ceiling modelled on a nomadic tent, unlike the more familiar cave forms.
  • Cave 16’s Uyghur-style sculptures and Cave 18’s sutra-transformation mural reward close attention during the guided visit.
Insider Tips

Treat this as a complement to Mogao Caves, rather than a substitute for a larger Mogao visit.

The caves are cool inside, so bring a light outer layer even in summer.

The ticket includes the basic visit; prioritise the guided explanation and time inside the caves.

Heavy rain, snow and strong sandstorms can close the caves; online reservation tickets can be changed or refunded.

You can make a short stop near the Dang River Gorge afterward, but do not let the walk take time away from cave entry.
