How to Visit
1

Plan Yardang as a full western-route day from Dunhuang

Drive or hire a car from central Dunhuang to Yardang, about 165 km one way and roughly 2.5 hours by road. Leave the city with a full fuel tank or battery and carry enough water and food.

Tip:Fuel, charging, food, water, and mobile signal are limited along this Gobi route, so prepare before leaving Dunhuang.
2

Book online and use the mandatory sightseeing-bus route

Book online through the official WeChat account, You Dunhuang, or Ctrip before leaving town. Admission is CNY 50 plus a mandatory CNY 70 sightseeing bus; private cars are not allowed inside the park. Follow the fixed bus route from the visitor centre.

Tip:The formations are widely dispersed and the Gobi has no continuous shade or supplies; regular ticket windows serve special groups only.
3

Follow the four-stop standard route

The standard route passes Golden Lion Welcomes Guests, Sphinx, Peacock Standing Gracefully, then West Sea Fleet. It covers about 46 km and takes roughly 1.5-2 hours, with 10-30 minutes at each stop.

Tip:Note your bus position and meeting time before getting off, so photography does not make you miss the next section.
4

Choose the off-road transfer only at Peacock Standing Gracefully

At Peacock Standing Gracefully, decide whether to transfer to an off-road vehicle for the deeper interior route. This add-on costs about CNY 150 per person and suits visitors who want more time and more remote formations.

Tip:Do not confuse the off-road scenery with the regular sightseeing-bus stops.
5

Place West Sea Fleet at the end if sunset is the priority

Aim to enter after 17:00 if sunset is the priority. The regular bus follows its fixed route, while the off-road option offers more flexibility for a sunset stop.

Tip:In strong wind and sand, stay within open areas rather than walking off in search of a photo position.
Highlights
  • The four-stop standard route concentrates the most recognisable Yardang formations into one workable visit.
  • Peacock Standing Gracefully is the division point between the standard sightseeing route and the deeper off-road route.
  • The rows of ridges at West Sea Fleet best show the scale of the Yardang landscape.
  • The park lies at Dunhuang’s far western edge, forming the natural-landscape section after Yumen Pass.
Insider Tips

Do not treat Yardang, Yangguan and Yumen Pass as three equally short stops; Yardang has the longest return journey.

Red, orange and white clothing stands out clearly against the light-brown landforms.

Windblown sand can get into cameras, phones, ports and lenses, so bring a sealed bag or dust cover.

Summer ultraviolet exposure is intense; put on sun-protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and a face covering before leaving the bus.

Temperatures drop noticeably in the morning and evening, so bring an outer layer even in summer.
